What is spirituality? What is our culture?
In Zimbabwe, our culture is more than the clothes we wear or the language we speak. It is a way of life passed down from generation to generation — through our families, elders, traditions, values, customs and beliefs.
Sometimes you hear people saying, “Une chinhu mauri” — “You have something in you.” But what does that really mean?
Spirituality is understood differently by different people. For some, it is their relationship with God and their faith. For others, it may include traditional beliefs, connection with ancestors, family history, dreams, customs or spiritual experiences.
Before becoming afraid or accepting everything people tell you, learn and seek understanding. Ask questions. Speak to trusted elders. Understand your family history and traditions. And remember that not every dream, feeling or difficult experience automatically has a spiritual meaning.
