Good news for care and support workers who drive between clients: the vehicle allowance under the SCHADS and Aged Care Awards is rising from $1.01 to $1.05 per kilometre, starting the first full pay period on or after 1 September 2026.

It's a temporary six-month bump running to 28 February 2027, brought in by the Fair Work Commission to help workers cover rising fuel costs. If this applies to you, make sure your employer has updated your rate, and keep your travel logs up to date to get the correct reimbursement.

The NDIS is changing, and it's worth knowing what's actually in the fine print. Plan reviews start rolling out from January 2028, with around 240,000 current participants projected to transition off the scheme over the next decade. Funding for social and community activities will be capped at $26,000 a year, though people needing 24/7 care are protected from cuts.

Advocacy groups like PWDA say the changes must keep choice and control at the centre, warning that moving people off without funded community supports risks pushing the load back onto family carers. Your current rights and supports remain in place today, this is a gradual rollout.

From TikTok football commentary to a weekly slot on community radio 🎙️

Scotty Lamont has built a 26,000-strong TikTok following talking footy, and now interviews AFL players every Friday on Radio Port Phillip FM, all through Wallara's Media Pathway program. Station president John Shore says the change in him has been huge: "He's not shy anymore and he can talk about football with his head underwater."

More than 100 people with intellectual disability take part in the program each year, creating real content for real audiences, not just training.

For many adults with intellectual disability, MyPath Day Options at Minda is more than a program, it's a place to build skills, confidence and real friendships. Across two Adelaide locations, participants explore everything from pottery and cooking to budgeting, travel and employment pathways, all shaped around their own goals.

MyPath participant Trevor, a regular in the Pottery program, recently had his work featured at the Art on Partridge exhibition. "Coming to MyPath is one of the highlights of my week... I'm at my happiest when I'm here," he said.

A new NDIS bill is moving through parliament with no modelling and no published plan for what it will actually change.
