DoDarlo People may well Visit Sydney, but they Do Darlo. We encourage local businesses to collaborate to showcase their expertise through fun, local events.

Darlinghurst (or Darlo if you're local) is located Eastside, Sydney. It nestles between Surry Hills and Kings X/Potts Point, but nestling is not all it does :)

If you find yourself in Darling Harbour wondering WTF you are doing there then Darlo is for you. Come visit and hang with the countless quirky, independent, creative bods that call the Eastside home. That is why we are encouraging these

collaborations. To shine a light on the many faces of Darlo, where there's always something worth doing or seeing.

🌈 Vale Maxi Shield 🌈

We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Australian drag icon Maxi Shield.

Maxi was more than a performer, she was a trailblazer, a storyteller, and a fierce advocate for visibility, authenticity, and joy. Her presence on stage and in our community embodied the spirit of resilience and celebration that defines Darlinghurst and the broader global drag family.

For decades, Maxi brought laughter, heart, and courage to audiences across Australia and beyond. Her legacy lives on in every performer she inspired and every space made safer through her artistry and advocacy.

Our thoughts are with her loved ones, friends, and the entire drag community during this time.

Thank you, Maxi, for the colour, strength, and sparkle you shared with us all. 💖

She became a global television sensation in 2021, but Maxi Shield’s trailblazing career included the Sydney Olympics, Madonna tours, and decades of stage grit.

R U OK? Day

A simple question can change a life. Checking in with family, friends, or colleagues can make all the difference.

Today is a reminder that connection, conversation, and compassion matter. Asking, listening, and supporting isn’t just for today, it’s something we can all do, every day.

Together, let’s keep showing up for one another.

Join the Conversation: Recognising the Mardi Gras Parade Route as National Heritage

We’re at a pivotal moment in recognising our shared cultural heritage — the Sydney Gay and Le***an Mardi Gras Parade Route is currently under National Heritage Assessment by the Australian Heritage Council (AHC). This iconic route may soon be formally recognised for its profound significance in Australia's history and LGBTQIA+ culture.

The route is being evaluated under three key criteria:

* Criterion (a): It marks the location of the first Mardi Gras Parade — a landmark event in Australia’s history that sparked a nationally enduring celebration.

* Criterion (g): It holds deep meaning for LGBTQIA+ communities as a symbol of joyous celebration and cultural resilience.

* Criterion (h): It is closely tied to the legacy of the 78ers, who bravely participated in the 1978 protests and shaped the ongoing narrative of activism.

This is your invitation to help shape the legacy of this meaningful place:
Review the fact sheet to learn more about the proposed heritage values.
Complete the survey and share your perspective with the AHC.

Submissions are open until 11:59 pm AEST on Tuesday, 2 September 2025.

Let’s leverage our voices to support the recognition of this historic route — a testament to courage, community, and the enduring pursuit of equality.

The Australian Heritage Council is inviting comments on the National Heritage assessment of the Sydney Gay and Le***an Mardi Gras Parade Route.
