The room is starting to speak. Panels, carpet and lighting are now in place, and the space is beginning to hold the atmosphere it was designed for. Structure has become texture. There is still more to come before the story is complete.

BEHIND THE DESIGN BRIEF, PART 1: PEOPLE, PURPOSE AND PLACE

Family of four.
6.5 to 7m room.
$250k budget.

That is a starting point, not a design brief.

Before equipment or aesthetics are considered, we need to understand who will use the room, how often, for what, and what experience they want from it.

One of the traps is designing around what people think a cinema should have, rather than how it will actually be used.

Will the whole family use the room regularly, or will it usually be one or two people. Will friends genuinely be there often enough to influence the design, or is that an occasional scenario.

The same applies to content. Movies, sport, gaming, concerts and streaming may all form part of the brief, but understanding the primary use helps establish what the room needs to support. Certain uses bring their own technical considerations too. Gaming and latency, for example, need to be identified early.

Then there is where the cinema sits within the architecture.

What is above, below and beside it. Bedrooms, living spaces, concrete structure or lightweight construction. A cinema beneath bedrooms can call for a different sound isolation strategy to one below ground and surrounded by concrete. Structure, adjoining spaces and mechanical services all shape the approach.

Is it a dedicated cinema, or part of an open-plan living space. A dedicated room gives far greater control over light, acoustics, speaker placement and low-frequency behaviour. An open space introduces compromises that need to be understood from the outset.

A good brief is not about accommodating every scenario. Our role is to draw out the people, the primary purpose and the space, then design around how the room will actually be used.

Low frequencies are harder to control than most people expect. Proper acoustic treatment is what makes bass feel tight, controlled and believable in the room, not just loud.

Five years of award recognition, each one a reflection of the same principle: architecture, acoustics and performance resolved as one experience. A look back at the rooms that earned it.

Small adjustments in speaker placement can shift how a room performs entirely. David explains why in the full video on our YouTube channel. Link in the comments.

The cinema experience doesn't begin at the door. It begins the moment you step into the space that leads there.

A private bar, curated glassware, a dedicated arcade corner and a wall of films to choose from, all considered as part of the journey, not an afterthought to it. Every element is integrated into the architecture of the home, setting the tone before the lights ever dim.

This is what we mean when we say a cinema should be an experience, not a room. The anticipation matters as much as the performance itself.

Throw ratio determines far more than screen size.

It is the relationship between a projector's distance and the image it produces, and it shapes decisions long before the room is finished: ceiling height, seating position, even where light and joinery can sit. Considered early, the technology becomes incidental.

The image becomes everything.

Designing a cinema from a blank page can feel like the hardest part.

Signature Series removes that uncertainty. Seven designs, each already resolved for acoustics, materials and architectural proportion, give you a defined and confident starting point. From Horizon's sleek restraint to The Sanctuary's quiet luxury, every design carries its own identity.

From there, nothing is fixed. Our designers personalise every detail around your home and the way you live in it.

This is why Signature Series exists: the confidence of a proven design, with none of the compromise.
