How to Harvest Propolis

Propolis is the sticky, resinous substance bees collect from trees and plants to seal small gaps and help protect their hive. The easiest and cleanest way to harvest it is with a flexible propolis collector mat. You can also scrape off propolis carefully from the tops and edges of boxes and frames.

Place the mat directly over the top bars beneath the inner cover. The bees will gradually fill the small openings with propolis. Once the mat is well coated, remove it from the hive and place it inside a clean, food-safe bag in the freezer for several hours. When thoroughly frozen, twist, bend or roll the mat and the brittle propolis will break away easily. Sift out any wax, wood or hive debris, then store the propolis in a clean, airtight container in a cool, dark place or freezer.

Avoid collecting propolis from dirty or chemically treated hive surfaces, and leave enough in the colony for the bees’ own use. Propolis can also stain clothing and tools, so gloves are helpful!

Once cleaned, harvested propolis can be used to make tinctures, infused oils, balms, salves, soaps and even toothpaste! Because raw propolis contains wax and other debris, it should be cleaned and properly extracted before use rather than consumed directly. Always follow a tested recipe, label homemade products clearly and use caution as propolis and other bee products can cause allergic reactions, particularly in people sensitive to bee stings, honey, pollen or tree resins.

Flexible propolis collector mats are available at BeeCraft Supply & Studio. Visit us at 65 Church Street South in Ajax or shop online at www.beecraft.ca
