Frank (Franz) Johnston (1888–1949) was one of the original members of the Group of Seven, joining the group at its founding in 1920. Johnston participated in the Group of Seven’s first exhibition in 1920, at the Art Gallery of Toronto (today, the Art Gallery of Ontario) but his time with the group was relatively brief. In 1924, he left to pursue his own artistic direction and later moved to Winnipeg, where he became an important figure in the Manitoba art community.
Despite his shorter association with the Group of Seven, Johnston made an important contribution to the development of Canadian landscape painting.
