Do you know if your San Pedro cactus is the real deal?

Many San Pedro sold in North America are a cultivated variety called PC pachanoi. These have been selectively propagated for use in landscaping.

True San Pedro (Trichocereus pachanoi) contain higher concentrations of the psychedelic compound mescaline and are more sought after by collectors. Here's an easy way to tell the two apart by looking at the side profile of the cactus.

On the left is a true San Pedro. The areoles point only slightly upwards giving the cactus a wavy side profile. Areoles are the points on a cactus where the spines stick out.

On the right is the more common and less desirable PC pachanoi. The areoles are pointed more upwards giving the cactus a more saw toothed side profile.

I’m looking for pictures of different pe**te locales to use in an article about the diversity of pe**te. If you would like to have your cactus featured in this article, please share pictures of mature pe**te (preferably flowering) with the locale name.

This photo was provided by a friend and features a Lophophora williamsii Huizache, which grows in San Luis Potosí, central‑northern Mexico.

This is the seedling of a psychedelic cactus known as the San Pedro. It may be small now, but they can grow up to a foot per year and reach heights of up to 20 feet. Once mature they produce large white flowers. They can be easily grown from seed and are legal in Canada and the USA.

This psychedelic cactus is known as the Peruvian Torch. Native to the high altitudes of the Andes Mountains, it has been boiled into a psychedelic tea and used in religious ceremonies for centuries.

It belongs to the same Trichocereus family as the San Pedro cactus, but unlike San Pedro, it has long needles. The two can be interbred to create interesting hybrids that can vary widely in appearance.

They are easy to care for and like lots of sunlight. Despite containing the psychoactive compound mescaline, they are legal to grow in both Canada and the USA.
