I used to turn my nose up at quilt panels… but, I have come to appreciate their usefulness. They set boundaries, but no rules, so a great way to re-ignite the free motion skills which have been idle for a while this summer.

After seeing each winner’s work at Quilt Canada 2026, we asked them to share the story behind their work. We begin with Elaine Armstrong of Ont., who won for Excellence in Sustainability.
As she tells us, this fun piece took more than a year to move the ideas from swimming through her head through to completion. She had to problem solve every step of the way and develop new and improved skills as the piece progressed.
The journey included scoping out the right manhole covers and a plan to run into traffic — which her loving husband refused to support. Despite these obstacles, she persevered and loves the outcome.
Égout Pluvial intended to highlight the message of warning that decorative manholes give us. Do not let toxins run into our drainage system—all runoff eventually makes its way into our freshwater system.

Since installing this foot on the machine is a little tricky, simply take the folded instructions out of the package and use them to level out the base of the foot! Easy peasy!

This bi-level foot has been one of the most useful tools in my sewing kit!
I free motion and bind a lot of charity quilts and this makes sewing the binding down so much faster then hand stitching and it’s useful for other things also.. like making garments with binding on armholes and necklines…
Ps, we have been asked to machine stitch the bindings on the charity quilts since the machine binding will hold up better when frequently washed.
