So this may why not start a pop-up mending group at your local pub, or if you have a business mending locally, please let us know so we can help you advertise.

Well, the weather may have been a little bit random this May, but you can’t deny the Beltane Energy that’s in the air.

In this window, we celebrate the joy of the Maypole. If you live around here, you might be fortunate to experience the dance, the music, the Joy on the faces of our multigenerational community.

And so our beautiful community wishing tree became the centrepiece of our very own Second Life maypole. One of our Volunteers Freya, constructed this maypole by cutting up pieces of rag that were destined for incineration. Clothes that were too far damaged. But you know at Second Life we’re always trying to come up with new ways to reuse and repurpose whatever we can. Rag bunting is next on the crafting list! I wonder if one of you will beat us to it?

We hope you can come by and see for yourselves, the little updates happening in our window.

enjoy the month of May, everyone

Local Cyclist Completes “Cycle for Recycling” Challenge in Support of Second Life

Second Life was delighted to welcome local Forest Row cyclist and entrepreneur John Clutterbuck back to the village after completing an extraordinary cycling challenge from Santiago in Spain to Istanbul, Turkey.

Over a demanding 20-day journey covering more than 4,000 kilometres and 30,000 metres of climbing, John and two friends, Dr Ben Hope and Prof Simon Beams, raised more than £1,300 for Second Life through John’s “Cycle for Recycling” campaign.

The funds raised will be reinvested into local recycling and sustainability initiatives that benefit the Forest Row community.

Speaking about the experience, John said:
“The challenge was about discipline, resilience and learning how to stay balanced and sustainable through both the difficult and joyful moments. Managing the physical and mental demands day after day taught me a lot about focus, energy and staying present. Despite the challenges, it became a real celebration of being human.”

Patricia Patterson-Vanegas, Chair of the Board of Trustees for Second Life, said:
“We are incredibly grateful that John chose Second Life as the charity for his ‘Cycle for Recycling’ challenge. The funds raised will directly support local recycling initiatives and help raise awareness about reducing waste and living more sustainably.”

Anyone interested in hearing more about the challenge is invited to join John and his team at a community celebration at The Hop Yard on Saturday 9 May from 3pm.

BOOK OF THE WEEK 📚🤩⭐️

BUTTER by Asako Yusuki

The cult Japanese bestseller about a female gourmet cook and serial killer and the journalist intent on cracking her case, inspired by a true story.

There are two things that I can simply not tolerate: feminists and margarine.

Gourmet cook Manako Kajii sits in Tokyo Detention Center convicted of the serial murders of lonely businessmen, who she is said to have seduced with her delicious home cooking. The case has captured the nation’s imagination but Kajii refuses to speak with the press, entertaining no visitors. That is, until journalist Rika Machida writes a letter asking for her recipe for beef stew and Kajii can’t resist writing back.

Rika, the only woman in her news office, works late each night, rarely cooking more than ramen. As the visits unfold between her and the steely Kajii, they are closer to a masterclass in food than journalistic research. Rika hopes this gastronomic exchange will help her soften Kajii but it seems that she might be the one changing. With each meal she eats, something is awakening in her body, might she and Kaji have more in common than she once thought?

Inspired by the real case of the convicted con woman and serial killer, “The Konkatsu Killer,” Asako Yuzuki’s Butter is a vivid, unsettling exploration of misogyny, obsession, romance and the transgressive pleasures of food in Japan.

When Sally met Sally…. No word of a lie….. this customer met her alter ego in our shop. This beautiful printed pink dress from Zara had just been put on our mannequin, when a customer of ours walked in wearing the same dress! It’s now sold sadly, but we wanted you to all enjoy this serendipitous moment.

They both look stunning, didn’t you agree?

Time for BOOK OF THE WEEK.

Author Esther Freud grew up in our neighbourhood, going to school at Michael hall. This book is all about her childhood living up on the Ashdown forest. Thats pretty special indeed.

‘Wonderful ... Freud has a precious and remarkable gift for creating fictional children. She is infinitely patient with the subtle differences between the worlds of children and adults, and her descriptions of the collisions between them are hauntingly beautiful’ The Times

Nine-year-old Tess has never seen anything like The Wild.

An old bakery, converted into a home, it has a fireplace big enough to sit in, a garden with a badminton net and another one for vegetables. And then there’s William, its owner. Single father of three, he cooks homemade ravioli, cuts trees down with a chainsaw and plays the guitar. When her mother, Francine, rents two rooms from him, Tess can hardly believe her luck.

Her brother Jake, however, proves harder to convince. As the two grown-ups begin to fall for each other, Tess struggles to please the adults as well as win Jake round. But she finds that good intentions don’t always bring happiness and that adults are disturbingly capable of making mistakes...

Our BOOK OF THE WEEK at Second Life 📘📕📗

FROM THE PUBLISHER

A compelling, extraordinary memoir by a diagnosed sociopath.

‘Gripping and important’ Jon Ronson

M. E. Thomas is a high-functioning non-criminal sociopath. She is charismatic, ambitious and successful. You would be charmed by her if you met her, might even be seduced by her. You would not realise that she is studying you to find your flaws, that she is ruthlessly manipulative, has no empathy and does not feel guilt or remorse. But she does like people - she likes to touch them, mould them and ruin them. She could be your friend or your boss. She could be you . . .

Now she writes with breathtaking honesty about her life. She also draws on the latest research to explain why at least one in twenty-five of us are sociopaths - and shows why that’s not a bad thing. By turns fascinating, shocking and funny, Confessions of a Sociopath is a gripping insight into the mind of a self-confessed predator.
