Safe moving and handling is about more than technique – it’s about protecting the people who care for others every single day.

On National Back Exchange , we’re reminded of something that’s just as important every day of the year: safe practice, good training, and reducing the risk of injury across health and care environments.

Proper moving and handling doesn’t just protect patients – it also safeguards staff wellbeing, confidence, and long-term careers in demanding roles where physical strain is part of the job.

In training, realism makes all the difference. That’s why healthcare teams regularly practise these essential skills using simulation tools like our manikins from Ruth Lee Ltd, helping build safe technique, confidence, and muscle memory before it matters in real life.

A simple principle with a lasting impact: safe handling protects backs, and it protects the people behind them ❤️

Today, we're proud to support National Back Exchange Moving & Handling Day and celebrate the positive progress being made across health and social care.

It's an important opportunity to recognise the role that safe and effective moving and handling plays in supporting dignity, independence and wellbeing for the people receiving care and support.

We're particularly encouraged by the growing focus on proportionate moving and handling and the principles of Right Care, Right Time. Supporting people to do as much as they can for themselves, while providing the right level of assistance when needed, can help promote independence, maintain mobility and improve outcomes.

Good moving and handling practice is about more than reducing risk. It's about enabling movement, supporting wellbeing and helping people live as independently as possible.

Let's continue working together to promote safer practice, person-centred care, and a culture that values both wellbeing and independence.

Moving & Handling Awareness Day

As many of you may know, Moving & Handling is a core part of what we do here at CTC. Whether we're working in the community to support unpaid carers with practical advice and guidance, or delivering training to professional carers to help them provide outstanding care, safe moving and handling practices are essential to protecting both carers and those they support.

That's why, for this year's Moving & Handling Awareness Day, we are proud to pledge:

"To continue supporting unpaid and professional carers across the country by providing accessible information, practical guidance, and best-practice moving and handling techniques."
