πŸ₯³** Dr Tim Gregory 7.30pm, Thursday 11th June **πŸ₯³

Dr Tim Gregory was a star at Words By The Water Keswick this year with many people saying his talk was the best they've ever seen! So we had to invite him to Bookends Carlisle....

**A best book of 2025 in The Times, The i Paper and Nature**

Tim will discuss his visionary new book 'Going Nuclear' which argues the case for nuclear power as our biggest weapon in
the fight for net zero and challenges the conventional wisdom that renewables are the only green alternative. Tim is a nuclear scientist, writer and regular broadcaster across TV and radio. He welcomes debate on his subject matter and we know this will be a passionate and lively event!

7.30pm, Thursday 11th June,

Paul Eastham - Secrets of the Hidden People

We're delighted to say this sold out talk has now been rescheduled to Friday 15th May at 3pm at Keswick Museum.

Cumbrians are called the Hidden People because mainstream history claims their Celtic heritage was erased by Roman, Viking, Anglo-Saxon and Norman invasions. This succession of incomes certainly tried to drive Cumbrian culture underground over centuries of suppression but ultimately failed.

Popular local historian Paul Eastham will reveal insights into Cumbria's deep Celtic past and unearth the Cumbrian character at the core.

🎟 Tickets: £8

After contacting all previous ticket holders there are still a handful of tickets available in Bookends, Keswick. Please pop in or call 017687 75277 ☺️

It's been exactly a week since we had a very special event with at Words By The Water Keswick . Brian was so warm, entertaining and astute and it was a wonderful event in a packed out theatre.

Gwenda, who passed away in January, had organised the event and knew Brian from previous events at Bookends, including one occasion when she drove Brian to the factory in Carlisle where custard creams are made!

It was a very tender moment in the evening when Brian dedicated this incredible poem to Gwenda . It's available in the independent bookshop exclusive edition of Brian's forthcoming book 'How to Lay an Egg with a Horse Inside' and seems so apt for a woman who dedicated her life to bookshops πŸ“š

What an amazing time we had last week at Words By The Water Keswick - we are festival partners and official bookseller for the 5 day celebration of words and books and this year really was phenomenal!

As well as the wonderful festival team, the festival volunteers and we'd really love to thank everyone at and for everything they do to create the festival bookshop...literally thousands of books have to be unpacked, checked, sorted and carried πŸ’ͺ, posters have to be made, brochures distributed, window displays created and that's all before the festival even starts! The festival bookshop team were incredible too...so welcoming, enthusiastic and hardworking. Thank you so much, we really couldn't do it without you β€οΈπŸ™β€οΈ

Oh yes...We'd also love to thank all of you for visiting the festival and the bookshop too! What a fantastic atmosphere and show of support you gave to a local business...we'll see you next year! πŸ˜€

So that's it for another year... The sun has set on Words by the Water 2026.

Old friends were reunited - and new friends were made.

Thoughts, ideas and words were shared.

New books and authors were discovered and old favourites were revisited.

People travelled across the country to help us celebrate our 25th Anniversary, every one of them different, yet united by their love of the written (and spoken) word.

A HUGE thank you to everyone who has contributed to the success of Words by the Water 2026.

Writers, Chairs, Speakers, Festival Patrons, our volunteers, Theatre by the Lake and their staff (especially Mary Elliott) and volunteers, drivers, tech team, backstage crew, the Bookends Bookshop team, catering staff, accommodation providers, the Merienda, Catherine from Appletrees and Heather from West View and so many more.

A special thanks to the Words by the Water team including Jane, Flo & Chris Edwards, Festival Director Leah Varnell, Festival President Marie Elsa Bragg and Bookends Director and Festival Partner Lucy Matthews.

Thanks also to all the schools who participated in the Cumbrian Young Writers Awards. We hope to read more of your inspiring work in the future!

Thanks also to so many long standing friends of the Festival who have supported on so many levels - you know you are! ❀

And finally, THANK YOU to all our Festival goers. It's been an absolute pleasure to see so many smiling faces this year.

Don't forget to follow our socials for more pics and updates - and sign up to our newsletter to be first to hear about next year's dates and line-up!
