Out Friday! Placebo - RE:Created. The 30th anniversary edition of Placebo’s self-titled debut recreated by Brian Molko & Rob Kirwan from the original master tapes.

I was a huge fan of this record at the time but hadn’t heard it in yeeeears. This new remaster/recreation has given the songs a whole new lease of life & I recommend any fans of the band old or new to give it a go!

The band explain:

“This project was about finally finishing the record, dragging it into the 21st century sonically, while preserving the integrity and the spirit of the original. It’s not about improving it, there’s nothing wrong with it, it’s about completing it.

When we made the first album, we didn’t yet have the experience or the studio knowledge to fully translate what was in our heads. Over the years, the songs took on a life of their own on stage; they grew, they developed, they kind of completed themselves.

It’s a celebration of where we began, and a meeting point between who we were then and who we are now; a way of honoring that innocence, while letting the songs exist with the scale, confidence, and energy of the band we’ve become.”

Out today! ‘I Built You A Tower’, the highly anticipated new studio album from Defend favourites Death Cab For Cutie.

I’ve been a big fan of Death Cab ever since buying ‘We Have The Facts & We’re Voting Yes’ from the Slater St branch of Probe back when they had an emo section. The band’s sound has changed over the years but Ben Gibbard’s song-writing remains as consistent as ever, with this eleventh album a worthy addition to their back catalogue. Available in-store & from the Defend webstore now!

Happy 35th anniversary to ‘Gish’! The first time I saw Smashing Pumpkins was their performance of ‘Rhinoceros’ for the BBC’s ‘No Nirvana’ special in 1992. I went out & got ‘Gish’ as soon as possible (I bought the album of pretty much every other band on ‘No Nirvana’ too).

Smashing Pumpkins at that time seemed so cool & otherworldly & I hadn’t heard anyone else like them. The album didn’t disappoint & I love it to this day. Get the 35th anniversary vinyl reissue of Smashing Pumpkin’s ‘Gish’ in-store from tomorrow

Out tomorrow! The brand new album from up & coming singer-songwriter Paul McCartney. ‘The Boys of Dungeon Lane’ is a collection of rare & revealing glimpses into memories never-before shared, along with some newly inspired love songs, from one of the most culturally significant figures of our time. These extraordinary new songs find Paul writing with rare openness about his childhood in post-war Liverpool, the resilience of his parents, & early adventures shared with George Harrison & John Lennon long before the world had ever heard of Beatlemania. Available in-store & online on indies-only pink vinyl

Out today! With their new album ‘Wired’ Basement are back firing on all cylinders , but they’re not interested in rehashing old glories. The whole band was adamant that Wired had to be their most decisive artistic statement yet. Title-track “WIRED” is the most urgent they’ve ever sounded, a surefire live staple propelled by needling guitars, a slugging drumbeat, and a skyscraping hook that finds Fisher’s voice in peak form. “Broken By Design” has the opposite temperament: dusky, delicate, bass-led, but still quintessentially Basement in its immediate catchiness and moody character. Nothing on Wired sounds stagnant. Not one part feels undercooked. The band looked to a smorgasbord of adventurous heroes for inspiration (REM, Interpol, Smashing Pumpkins, to name a few) without ever sounding like they’re imitating any one band — not even themselves.
The record’s title condenses all of this into a single word. The textural connotations of Wired — metallic, sharp, jagged — evoke the album’s steely sonics, and on a more conceptual level, the title speaks to Basement’s unshakeable tenacity. An analog band who’ve thrived in an increasingly digital world without resting on the comforts of nostalgia. Five friends who’ve persisted through several breakups and breakthroughs, but have only grown as people and evolved as a musical unit. At this point, Basement have to accept their fate: they’re wired for this s**t
