This evening in Pickering Book Tree 🎶

There’s still time to join us if you’re yet to book!

We’re very much looking forward to welcoming musician, author and wildlife biologist Toni Bunnell to perform her original songs accompanied on guitar, Appalachian dulcimer and hurdy gurdy.

Toni’s music is deeply rooted in the land, transporting us to the earthy richness of the British countryside, the free-flowing musicality of streams, the incredible wildlife for whom this island is home, and the urgent need to protect them.

Doors open at 7pm for a 7.30pm start. There will be a licensed bar and a raffle too.

Tickets are pay what you feel (£5 minimum, £10 suggested) and 100% of all ticket (+ raffle) sales will be donated to Protect the Wild.

Or message Pickering Book Tree to reserve places and pay on the door.

Here we go!

Thank you to everyone who came out to support a wonderful festival launch event.

And a special thanks to Wyl Menmuir for giving us such intriguing insight into his brilliant new book The Spirit of Stone.

What a great evening we all had, with so many fascinating stories from some of the many people Wyl has met on his journeys to discover the spirit of stone which connects us all.

Check out pickeringmidsummerfestival.co.uk to see the many varied events taking place over the next five days, including Beck Isle Museum and Ryedale Folk Museum who have a fantastic range of activities and events over the weekend!

In a few hours — there’s still time to join us!

Doors open from 7pm (we’ll start at 7.30) and it’s free to attend.

We’re so much looking forward to our conversation with Wyl Menmuir about the absolutely absorbing third part to his series of books connecting us to the sea, forest, and now stone.

The Spirit of Stone is about our connection with earth and rock, from the natural world to dry stone walls, sacred sites, art from early humans to today’s sculptors, and much more.

Wyl has curated fascinating stories and insights from the people he’s met on his journeys across the British Isles.

As Wyl’s previous event two years ago when he visited to discuss The Heart of the Woods, we know that he’ll share some wonderful stories during the evening!

This will be a brilliant day of traditional crafts at Beck Isle Museum!

That evening there will also be a ceilidh at Pickering Memorial Hall — we love a good ceilidh, and no experience needed as all dances will be guided.

See Beck Isle Museum’s post below and pickeringmidsummerfestival.co.uk for more info.

This will be such a brilliant daytime conversation in Pickering’s medieval church with nationally bestselling author, historian and artist Amy Jeffs!

From women communing with flocks of birds to men raised by wolves, and severed heads calling from between bristling paws, the stories of saints have shaped landscapes, rituals and folk beliefs.

For just £5 you can hear about these incredible legends and their fascinating histories under Pickering’s beautiful medieval paintings depicting some of the same stories.

Plus you’ll be supporting the roof and murals restoration fund, as £2 from each ticket will be donated to help protect these rare medieval wall paintings.

Visit pickeringmidsummerfestival.co.uk for more information, or contact Pickering Book Tree to book offline.

This will be a lovely walk around Pickering Beck and Castle hearing about the folklore of the trees we can find on our doorstep!

Author, illustrator and tree enthusiast Aidan Meighan will talk about the myths, seasonal customs and superstitions of the trees along the route…

Starting outside Beck Isle Museum we’ll gently follow the Beck up to Pickering Castle and back down to St Peter's and St Paul's Church, stopping to hear about some of the many types of tree we’re lucky to have so close to Pickering!

There will be a sandwich buffet in the garden of the Forest and Vale Hotel for anyone on the walk who wants to join us for food afterwards (we need to know a couple of days ahead for this).

We’re really looking forward to this intriguing tree walk!

☀️ Next Sunday

As the Summer Solstice twilight nears, join us for a haunting evening of stories told through music, words and art.

Author and historian Amy Jeffs, artist Gwen Burns and musician Natalie Brice will sing in mesmerising harmony, accompanied by animated versions of Gwen’s art and Amy’s historical insight into these timeless tales, both taken from their book Old Songs.

Appearing as the trio Soft Lap, Amy, Gwen and Natalie will sing some of the oldest known versions of Britain’s traditional ballads.

For a taste of their music, listen to their beautiful rendition of Merry It Is on YouTube here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lA2OIMapuig

Natalie has released an album of the ballads featured in Old Songs, which you can explore on Ditto Music at ditto.fm/old_songs
