Either way, there’s a lot of low end being carried by James Hetfield’s rhythm guitar. When you’re putting that much work into the picking hand, string choice is crucial. Led Zeppelin’s “Bron-Yr-Aur” is a wonderful reminder of what a single acoustic guitar can do. Some call Jimmy Page a “sloppy” guitarist, and he definitely prioritised emotion over playing every note cleanly on this track, but that’s one of the reasons it has such a unqiue character. The unusual open C6 tuning (C-A-C-G-C-E) is another distinctive feature of this composition, which Page also used for “Friends”.

Elixir’s Phosphor Bronze 12-53 strings are a natural fit for this track, bringing out more warmth compared to their 80/20 counterpart, and providing enough body for a rich sustain from those ringing open strings.
