At last! Record temperatures in the last week of May, the risk of frost has finally faded and the soil is warming up! 🌞

June is a golden month in the UK to maximise your summer harvest and in preparation for Autumn.

After months of planning, preparing beds, and nurturing seedlings indoors, June is the time to sow crops directly outside where they will grow and thrive naturally.

Root crops are especially suited to direct sowing because transplanting can damage or distort their roots. 🌿

Start biennials in nursery beds (or seed trays) before transplanting them into their flowering positions later in the season.

With regular sowing, careful watering, and a little patience, the garden will soon burst into life. ☔

Cucumbers don’t need ground space to thrive…Try them in hanging baskets!
By hanging them they get fewer pests and soil-borne diseases, have better airflow and develop straighter fruits!🤩

First choose your variety: 🥒
Look for compact, bush, or trailing varieties…Examples include;
‘Patio Packer’
‘Mini Munch’
‘Quick Snack’

Select a Basket:🧺
Use a large wire hanging basket (minimum 14 inches/35-40cm) with good drainage, as it needs space for roots.

Line the Basket:
You could use recycled fibre, however, you could line the wire cage with sphagnum moss or a hessian liner to hold the compost. If you’re using a plastic liner to retain moisture, pierce drainage holes in the sides.

Fill the Basket: 🪴
Add a handful of slow-release fertiliser to your high-quality, moisture-retentive potting compost.

Add the Plants:
A single cucumber plant will suffice but herbs such as oregano, dill, thyme or basil make good companions.

Positioning: 🌱
Mine will hang by my front door in full sun (6-8 hours), necessary for healthy growth.

Watering is critical:
Cucumbers are mostly water and will need frequent watering. Feed regularly with a high-potash fertiliser (same as for tomatoes) once it starts flowering.

It’s that time of year again… bindweed is waking up and starting to spread like it owns the place. 😅
Don’t wait until it’s wrapped itself around everything you love — early control makes a massive difference.

It might take a bit of persistence (this one doesn’t give up easily 💪), but stay on it and future-you will be very grateful later in the season.🙌🌸

Sunflowers are one of the easiest (and most fun) things to grow, especially with little helpers involved! 💗

Here are our top tips on how to grow your own from seed! 🌱

When to sow:
May is perfect for starting seeds indoors or straight outside once the soil warms up! 🌤️

Quick tips to get them thriving:

* Sow seeds about 1-2cm deep in pots or straight into the ground
* Keep soil moist (not soaked) while they germinate
* Give them plenty of light- they love the sun!
* Transplant carefully once seedlings are strong and about 10-15cm tall
* Stake taller varieties early to stop them toppling in the wind
* Feed occasionally for bigger blooms!

Can’t wait for them to bloom in the next couple of months! 🌻

Why not get involved in this year’s boxes of sunshine sunflower competition? We’re proud to be sponsoring it, and all for a wonderful cause! 💚
