Everyone's heard of matcha, the prized Japanese powdered green tea, but who knows what's behind it?
Come visit with Ikiya a tencha factory, the raw material for matcha, and discover how a simple tea leaf can become such an extraordinary beverage!
How is tencha produced?
- The shaded tea leaves are harvested and taken to the factory, where they are steamed to soften and prevent oxidation.
- They are then blown with hot air to separate them and begin drying.
- The leaves are then dried (roasted) in the "tencharo," a long traditional brick oven, and cooled down by a conveyor belt before being transported to the next stage.
- Special machines separate the stems from the actual leaf, which is then cut into evenly sized flakes: tencha.
- Tencha is finally taken to a blending machine and sealed in large bags, ready to be ground!
