Troilite is a rare, naturally occurring iron sulfide mineral with the chemical formula FeS. While it is incredibly scarce in Earth’s crust, it is a highly abundant, signature mineral found in meteorites (including those from the Moon and Mars).

Chemical Composition: It is composed strictly of Iron (Fe) and Sulfur (S) in a 1:1 stoichiometric ratio.

It has a metallic luster and appears as a dark bronze, brassy-brown, or dark gray mineral. In meteorites, it usually manifests as small scattered grains or rounded nodules.

It was named in honor of Domenico Troili, an Italian Jesuit scholar. In 1766, Troili witnessed a meteorite fall in Albareto, Italy, and documented a strange "brassy mineral" inside it. Nearly a century later, in 1862, mineralogist Gustav Rose officially analyzed the substance, realized it was a unique form of iron sulfide, and named it after Troili.
