Turmeric's active compound is curcumin, and on its own the body absorbs very little of it. Most of what you swallow passes straight through.
Black pepper changes that. It contains piperine, which slows how quickly the liver breaks curcumin down — meaning far more of it stays in circulation. The effect is dramatic, and it's the reason the two have been cooked together across South Asia for centuries. Long before anyone could explain the chemistry, cooks had worked out the pairing.
Fat helps too, which is why turmeric is usually bloomed in oil or ghee rather than sprinkled on at the end.
Golden Tonic pairs turmeric with ginger — earthy, warm, with enough heat to keep it from turning dull. Traditionally taken after meals.
