Meet a Member // Sarah Dunn

Back when First Light was still finding its footing, we turned to friends like Sarah for encouragement and inspiration. As a member of the original First Light Years cohort, she was one of those early believers who saw the vision for this shop. Sarah’s seen every mile of the journey so far and we were lucky enough to catch up over coffee last week.

Bookshops We Love // Lisbon, Portugal

Just south of the elegant Eduardo VII Park and the hulking Praça Marquês de Pombal is a bustling area of downtown Lisbon. Hotels, restaurants, offices, businesses—countless people coming and going, maneuvering their ways through the historical streets. Livraria Buchholz (), a neighborhood pillar for over 80 years, is a superb reprieve from the hustle outside. The grand spiral staircase guides you through three stories of literature, vinyl, and art, with plenty of spots to sit back and comb through your new books. It’s a monument in its own right, and a must-see for anyone visiting Lisbon.

In Austin, you gotta keep your eyes out for signs of autumn—it doesn’t happen so obviously with the leaves changing all at once. The keen eye knows to check the First Light store sign. If we’ve covered the “K” and transformed into the neighborhood “BOO SHOP” then know the decorative gourds and inflatable ghosts are soon to follow. We’re all for getting swept up in the season, and cracking open the right kind of eerie read can amp it up even more. In the heart of the stacks at First Light, one bookcase stands alone—both in appearance and in position. It’s our beloved poetry section. Poetry has a way of expressing emotion, thought, and experience in ways that are especially unique. And on the right day, the afternoon sun comes in through our skylights and shines on the poetry section juuuust right, a beacon for anyone who needs some thoughtful words. Though that was just serendipitous. For some, poetry is sacred, for others, it can be intimidating. Our resident poetry lover and bookseller, Michael Martinec, picked some of his favorite collections that folks looking to begin the enriching and rewarding path through poetry should spend some time with.

☕️ 🍵 New fall menu drinks are here 🎃🍂

For the past few months, the crew behind your favorite First Light drinks has been perfecting some new additions to the menu and they’re now ready to be unveiled. Our cafe manager, Ben Cass, filled us in on what’s new:

Pumpkin Piloncillo Latte: “Obviously everyone—well, most everyone—loves a pumpkin spice latte, and I wanted to play with how we can elevate it while incorporating some Texas flavors. For those that don’t know, piloncillo is an unrefined brown sugar mostly found in Mexican desserts. I was really inspired by a piloncillo cake I had at Este, and found a way to bring something similar to our menu at First Light. This latte has a little bit of guajillo spice as well as a decent amount of cinnamon to bring it all together.”

Honey Ginger Matcha: “It’s still 85° in the middle of October so I wanted something that was going to be refreshing but still had a good amount of that “fall flavor” in it. This matcha uses fresh ginger that’s steeped in a honey ginger syrup for over a half hour to give it a nice amount of spice with gentle sweetness.”

All season and throughout the holidays we’ll be adding new drinks and bites to the cafe menu, try something outside of your usual next time you swing by the shop!

Inventive, approachable, clever, captivating. Anne Carson, poet and essayist, is this newest laureate of the Nobel Prize in Literature. Her work has helped reshape traditional thought around poetry and allowed those too timid to crack the genre—she created an entry point into a world they thought could never be theirs too. When asked how she was going to celebrate, Anne said, “We’re going to go out walking in the woods... And then we’re going to listen to the quiet.” The committee made the right choice. Her work will have a dedicated display in the shop and her complete catalog will be among the shelves. If you haven’t read any Carson yet, our book buyer, Sam Ackerman, recommends folks start with The Beauty of the Husband, Eros the Bittersweet, Glass, Irony & God, and of course, Autobiography of Red. Congrats to Anne, it feels like we all won this year.
