We mark eight Sabbats on the calendar.

But the Wheel doesn’t turn eight times a year.

It’s turning now.

Between Samhain & Yule, between Yule & Imbolc, between every named point we have given it, the season continues to move.

The Sabbats give us thresholds within the turning year. They do not contain it.

October 31 gave us the traditional calendar observance of Samhain. On November 7, the Sun reaches 15° Scorpio, marking the astronomical cross quarter.

And here we are between them.

Not waiting for the next date.

Standing within the season itself.

Perhaps practicing the Wheel was never meant to be about moving from Sabbat to Sabbat.

It begins by noticing where we actually are.

What is changing in the land around you?
What has disappeared since you last looked?
What remains?
What is beginning to show itself?

The calendar can tell us the date.

The season tells us where we are.

The Wheel gives us thresholds.
The season gives us everything between them.

Practice in season.

October 31 has passed.

Samhain has not.

This morning arrived beneath mist & rain, with wet leaves & the trees disappearing into a grey November sky. It feels less like the morning after Samhain and more like we’ve walked deeper into it.

And perhaps we have.

October 31 is our traditional calendar observance of Samhain, but the Wheel is larger than a single date. The astronomical cross quarter of Samhain still lies ahead, arriving when the Sun reaches 15° Scorpio.

This year, that threshold falls on November 7.

I have practiced the Wheel for decades. I have long known that Beltane’s astronomical cross quarter shifts from year to year. Somehow, I had never followed that thought all the way around the Wheel.

If Beltane moves...

Samhain moves.

We’ll go there together later this week.

For today, look outside.

Notice where the season actually is.

The calendar says November 1.

The land says we are still walking through Samhain.

The Wheel marks thresholds.
The season gives us everything between them.

Practice in season.

For those whose names I know.
For those whose stories were handed down.
For those whose faces remain in photographs.
For those I knew & loved.
And for those whose lives made mine possible long before I arrived.

The Samhain threshold is a time of remembrance, but remembrance is more than looking backward.

They remain in the stories we tell, the things we keep, the features we recognize in our own faces & the lives that continued because theirs came first.

Today, I remember.

I took this photograph at Payette Lake in McCall, Idaho, a place I once called home.

I’ve always believed the natural world reveals far more than we notice at first glance.

That morning, the mist had settled so completely over the lake that the shoreline seemed to disappear. Water, earth & sky became almost indistinguishable. And for a moment, it felt as though I were looking into a place between worlds.

Tonight, on this eve of Samhain, I find myself returning to this photograph with the mystery that was was captured as if it is a time that is not a time, in a place just out of reach of the physical world.

For witches, the thinning veil is more than an expression. It speaks to the mysteries of what lies beyond our ordinary perception, to the ancestors who have walked before us & to the unseen currents we learn to recognize through our practice.

The natural world has always been one of my greatest teachers. Sometimes, all it asks of us is to pay attention.

May the season of Samhain reveal something extraordinary to you. 🖤

Some practices fade quietly into history. Others remain all around us, waiting for someone to notice them again.

I've been working on something new.

The Hidden Thread is a series exploring the lesser known practices, histories & relationships woven throughout witchcraft.

Our first essay begins in a rather unexpected place.

My kitchen. Making pasta. (100% true)

Long before I knew the word "lecanomancy", I found myself fascinated by the movement of oil upon water. Years later, that curiosity led me into the history of one of the oldest recorded forms of divination.

But this essay isn't simply about oil divination.

It's about observation, the relationship between materials & the magick that has always existed within the natural world.

The Hidden Thread is not a search for forgotten magick. It is a practice of noticing the relationships that have always been there.

Our first essay, When Oil Meets Water, is now available in the Busy Witch Box Journal (blog).

I'd love for you to join me.

The leaves have begun their return to the earth.

Every step through the autumn landscape is a reminder that Samhain is approaching. The land is changing, the season is speaking & the old familiar rhythms are unfolding beneath our feet.

We don't have to wait until October 31 to begin our work.

The season is already speaking.

The work begins with the witch. 🍂🖤

Why I don’t reveal the entire ritual before you open the box.🖤

I’ve been thinking about something I do a little differently with Busy Witch Box.

I don’t reveal the full ritual before the box reaches your hands.

I share the season, the intention behind the working & glimpses of the materials I’ve gathered. But there are elements I deliberately leave undisclosed.

And there’s a reason for that.

In witchcraft, there is a difference between knowing what you’re going to do & experiencing what unfolds when you do it.

A ritual is more than its individual components. A candle, a key, a length of cord or a handful of herbs may seem ordinary when viewed separately. Their meaning emerges through the relationships we create between them, the actions we undertake & the intention we bring to the work.

I spend months developing these rituals. Every correspondence, every material, every movement has a purpose.

But once the box leaves my studio, the work is no longer mine alone.

It belongs to the witch who opens it.

And I want you to encounter that working as it was designed to unfold, rather than arrive having already read every page, examined every object & anticipated every turn.

Not because the ritual contains secrets you aren’t meant to know.

But because there is something worth preserving in the experience of discovery.

There is still magick in what has yet to unfold.

The work begins with you.

In magick & moonlight✨
