Every summer, the whole extended family showed up to the same park with the same folding tables.

For many American families through the 1960s and 1970s, summer meant an annual family reunion, usually held at a local park or a grandparent's backyard, with folding tables lined up end to end under the shade of a few big trees. Every aunt and cousin brought their own signature dish, and there was always way more potato salad than anyone could realistically eat. Kids ran wild between cousins they only saw once a year, while the adults sat in lawn chairs trading the same stories they told every single summer, somehow just as funny each time. Someone always brought a Polaroid camera, snapping photos that would end up in a shoebox and get passed around at the next reunion for comparison. It wasn't fancy or planned down to the last detail, it was just family showing up, year after year, without needing much of a reason beyond that. Cars used to have tailfins, and somehow that felt completely normal.

By the late 1950s, American cars had entered their most dramatic design era, with sweeping tailfins, heavy chrome trim, and wraparound windshields that made even a trip to the grocery store feel like an event.
The 1959 Cadillac took tailfins to their most extreme point, with fins so tall they looked almost like they belonged on an aircraft rather than a family sedan. Cruising down Main Street on a Friday night became its own kind of activity, windows down, chrome catching the streetlights, radio turned up just enough. Neighbors could often recognize whose car was approaching just by the sound of the engine or the shape of the headlights in the distance. Cars felt less like appliances back then and more like genuine personality statements sitting right there in the driveway.
