✨ NOT EVERYTHING AT THE BRANT BELONGS ON A WALL!

🪿 MEET THE BIRD BEHIND THE BRANT!

Okay… be honest.

Did you know a brant is actually a bird? 🤔

More specifically, the Atlantic brant is a small sea goose—and it has a pretty special connection to Chincoteague.

Brant migrate south for the winter, and the shallow saltwater bays and marshes around Chincoteague and Assateague provide the kind of coastal habitat these little geese love. Unlike the geese you might picture wandering around farm fields, brant spend much of their winter on tidal waters, feeding on saltwater vegetation such as eelgrass. 🌊🌿

But their connection to Chincoteague goes beyond simply spending the winter here.

Brant are also part of the Eastern Shore’s long waterfowling and decoy-carving traditions.

And if you’ve been following us for a while, Roe “Duc-Man” Terry is probably a familiar name by now. ❤️

We’ve shared several pieces from the legendary Chincoteague carver’s personal collection—and just last week showed you how Roe himself even found his way into the pages of Assateague Dark.

📖 When Chincoteague’s real-life characters become part of the story… 🦆

There’s a pretty special connection hiding in this little corner of The Brant.

In Bob Adamov’s Assateague Dark, investigative reporter Emerson Moore returns to the Eastern Shore—and one of the people who becomes part of his adventure is none other than Chincoteague’s own legendary decoy carver and Saltwater Cowboy, Roe “Duc-Man” Terry.

Yes. THAT Roe Terry. ❤️

The same man whose hand-carved and hand-painted pieces we’re fortunate enough to have here at The Brant.

So sitting together in this photo are…

📰 A framed feature about the Chincoteague craftsman himself
📖 And Assateague Dark, a fictional adventure in which Roe becomes part of the story

It’s one of those wonderful little places where Chincoteague history and storytelling meet.

🧶💙 LITTLE CREATURES WITH A BIGGER STORY

If you’ve wandered through The Brant and spotted this colorful little collection, there’s more behind these adorable faces than you might realize. ❤️

These crocheted creations are 100% women-made products and part of a Fair Trade Give Back Program associated with The Turtleman Foundation, whose work focuses on education, conservation and sustainability. 🌎🐢

And the collection is seriously adorable.

🐢 SAVING ONE TURTLE AT A TIME 🌊💙

These beautiful little sea turtles at The Brant caught our attention because, well… just look at them. 🥹🐢

But the story behind The Turtleman Foundation deserves some attention, too.

Founded by marine conservationist Joseph “Joe Turtle” Conde, The Turtleman Foundation works to protect and conserve sea turtles and their habitats through science, education and community action.

Their work spans research, rescue, rehabilitation and outreach—and helps raise awareness about the very real challenges sea turtles face, including ocean pollution, fishing and the illegal trade of their shells.

And here’s something pretty incredible:

🐢 Sea turtles have been on Earth for more than 100 million years.

These amazing creatures have been navigating our oceans since long before any of us were here—and protecting them helps make sure they’ll still be here long after we’re gone. 💙

At The Brant, you’ll find a wonderful assortment of Turtleman Foundation sea turtle pieces in different colors, styles and designs.

They’re beautiful reminders of the ocean we love—and of the incredible creatures that call it home. 🌊
