‘Have Courage: Longmire Stories’ by Craig Johnson | Mystery Pick of the Month!

★Johnson, Craig. Have Courage: Longmire Stories. (A Longmire Mystery). Viking. Nov. 2026. ISBN 9798217379484. 256p. $28. Mystery

“Following two holiday collections in 2012 and 2014, Johnson has accumulated this batch of 13 stories set in wintry Wyoming. Sheriff Walt Longmire’s team is heading out for the holidays. Generous in nature, he takes the inevitable calls. In “Perfect A,” an aging Basque shepherd is erratic in his grocery shopping, and Walt drives off into the blizzard to check on him; surprisingly, the conductor Toscanini appears in this tale of empathy and classical music. Walt attends the parole hearing of a woman serving many years for a crime she did not commit in “Known Associate.” Compromised by her own bad behavior, she refuses to attend the meeting; Walt expects to try again next year. There is a Baby Jesus story, as well as ones featuring a skunk, identity theft, DNA tests, and antique furniture, not to mention sourdough starter and an old dog. VERDICT Johnson has been writing extraordinary books and TV scripts about Walt Longmire for decades. The O. Henry–esque twists that conclude every story in this collection are intricately plotted and expertly written. Like assorted homemade Christmas cookies, each story is an entire and perfect treat.” — Barbara Conaty for Library Journal
