I thought my hobby was making beaded jewelry. Turns out my actual hobby is buying beads, organizing them into rainbow order, staring at them, and feeling creatively fulfilled without making a single thing.

She finished these a week before Dolly died.

Emily Miscarriage & Pregnancy Loss Support | Nonprofit Organization had been designing this bracelet for years. It was a
New Year’s resolution she kept breaking. She finally made it on a family beach trip
this summer, the first in a line she’s dedicating to impactful women, and Dolly was
always going to be number one.

Then Dolly left us, and it became a memorial.

Each bracelet is made from 8 Howlite beads, 1 for each decade Dolly lived. 2 Swarovski crystals. A mix of
our matte Czech glass, because the whole point was color.

Her three boys were born in Nashville. All 3 got their first books from Dolly’s
Imagination Library. They know her by name.

So a portion of every bracelet goes to Next Door Foundation, a Milwaukee nonprofit whose
Books for Kids program and mobile library reach nearly 1,400 children a year.
Same work. Different city.

They launch tonight at 9:25 CST, 10:25 Eastern. She picked the time on purpose.

And I’m over here wondering why are we gluing rhinestones to something we’re throwing away when we could be making jewelry that’s equally sparkly and actually lasts?

The Atlantic recently published an article that broke my heart a little.

It’s called “The Color Recession,” and it’s about how we’ve collectively retreated into beige, gray, and greige over the past two decades. Not just our walls: our cars, appliances, our entire visual landscape.

The article is beautifully researched. It talks about how 80% of new cars are now grayscale. How purple car production dropped 93%. How real estate agents tell sellers to paint everything white. How we’ve become so afraid of making the “wrong” choice that we’ve stopped making brave ones.

Here’s the part that got me: Studies show people feel happier around warm colors like orange and yellow, calmer around blues and greens, and more depressed around too much gray. Yet gray is what we keep choosing.

We’re literally buying our way into boredom because it feels “safe.”

But then I thought about you. The women who shop here who are not participating in this recession. Who choose the brightest turquoise when everyone else is choosing taupe. Who make jewelry that gets compliments because it’s bold and unapologetically colorful.

You’re not choosing safe. You’re choosing happy.

The Atlantic says “color enthusiasts are stuck sneaking bright hues into gray.” But not here. Not in this corner of the internet. Not in what you’re making with your hands.

Here, color gets to be loud. Joyful. Defiant.

The world might be going beige. But what you make gets to be gloriously colorful.

Some weeks you’re curating beautiful beads. Some weeks you’re threatening small claims court and trying to remember if you ate lunch.
