Are you a young poet or filmmaker in the Dallas area? Submit your work to Art for Earth! The competition is open to all Dallas-area applicants aged 13-18, and film and poetry submissions are currently being accepted through September 30th.

The competition will be judged by Maria Ramos, Dallas Morning News journalist, Tim Brys, Perot Museum scientist, and Black Ceasar, 2026-28 Dallas Poet Laureate.

Each winner receives a $100 honorarium!

The headlining show for the Deep Vellum Music & Literature Festival at the historic Sons Of Hermann Hall was an unforgettable experience. A reading by Hanif Abdurraqib followed by a conversation with Lawrence Burney left the room buzzing with warmth and thoughtfulness. The spellbinding performances of DAMOYEE and headliner Jamila Woods were artistic gifts we will not soon forget.

Can’t believe it’s been almost a month since the Deep Vellum Music & Literature Festival! We are still thinking about the amazing talent on display throughout the weekend.

For our July issue, which explores our city’s elusive cultural identity, we invited some interesting Dallasites to answer this brief prompt: “Tell us a story about your Dallas.” Our hope was that the assembled essays would present a small, authentic picture of our city. ⁠

Will Evans is the founder and owner of Deep Vellum Publishing and Deep Vellum Books. He was inducted into the Texas Institute of Letters in 2022 and named a Fellow of the Dallas Institute of Humanities & Culture in 2023. In 2026, he helped launch the Deep Vellum Music and Literature Festival, bringing dozens of writers, musicians, and poets to 11 venues across Deep Ellum. Evans argues that Dallas' culture is built by its storytellers, not its institutions.
