Murviedro Cepas Viejas Bobal 2021

Old vines. An underdog Spanish grape. Now you have my attention. Did someone mention Spanish wines? 😍

Bobal has been growing in southeastern Spain for centuries, but for a long time much of it was destined for simple bulk wine. Then winemakers started paying attention to the region’s old vines and realized: Wait. We have something special here.

Cepas Viejas literally means “old vines,” and old Bobal vines can produce beautifully concentrated fruit with dark berries, plum, herbs, spice and a wonderfully savory Mediterranean character.

Bobal also happens to be one of Spain’s most widely planted red grapes, yet ask ten wine drinkers to name Spanish varieties and you’ll probably hear Tempranillo ten times before anyone says Bobal.

Consider this your reminder that sometimes the most interesting bottle on the table isn’t the famous one.

All my childhood and adult dreams came true last night at our Hamburger WagonWine Tasting!

When you have the opportunity to pair delicious wines with the most iconic hamburgers in Ohio, you simply can’t pass that up—and what a night it was!

A HUGE shout-out and thank you to Jack, Alex, and Becky from the Hamburger Wagon and Brian DeMarke from Cutting Edge SelectionsEdge for all of their hard work in helping make this crazy little dream of mine a reality. The wines were fantastic, the burgers were legendary, and having a room full of people enjoying them together made it even better.

This tasting was truly one for the books—one I’ll always remember. We just started a new tradition at The Parlor that we’ll be enjoying for many years to come.

Thank you to everyone who joined us around the table and made the evening so special.

What’s in your glass?

Jimbro Bruñal 2018

THIS is why I love finding different grape varietals.

Meet Bruñal, an extremely rare native Spanish grape found around Arribes, near Spain’s border with Portugal. You can drink Cabernet anywhere. Bruñal? You have to go looking for it.

And this particular bottle makes the story even better: 2018, limited edition, bottle No. 853.

Bruñal is known for deeply colored, concentrated wines with dark fruit, structure, spice and enough personality to remind you that wine does not have to taste like everything else on the shelf.

There’s something wonderful about opening a bottle made from a grape most people have never tasted, from a place most people have never visited.

Wine is delicious—but sometimes wine is also an adventure.

Drink it today or cellar it for years to come. Sounds like you need two bottles!

We'll be downtown Dayton tomorrow (Friday 9/4/26) selling burgers!!!! Where? Before and during our Wine Tasting event at The Parlor at The Mansion in Dayton, our Mobile Wagon will be selling burgers out in front from 3:30 to 7pm. The Wine Tasting ticketed event inside is sold out, but you can still stop and grab a burger or two... or a sack-ful....come get some! 136 West Monument Ave, Dayton. Hope to see some of our fans from Dayton!

WHAT’S IN YOUR GLASS?

Montalbera Timorasso Derthona

Move over Pinot Grigio. There is another Italian white we need to talk about.

Timorasso was once so close to disappearing that only a handful of acres remained in Italy. Winemaker Walter Massa famously helped bring this ancient Piedmont grape back from obscurity, and today Derthona—the historic name for Tortona—has become synonymous with some of Italy’s most exciting white wines.

Montalbera’s version is the opposite of a simple, forgettable white. It has texture, citrus, stone fruit, herbs and a beautiful mineral quality, and Timorasso is unusual because it can actually become more interesting as it ages.

Think of it as the white wine for the person who normally says, “I’m really more of a red wine drinker.”

A nearly forgotten grape with a second chance at life? That’s a bottle I want to know.

WHAT’S IN YOUR GLASS?

Godelia La Gineta

Here’s one for the wine adventurers.

La Gineta comes from Bierzo in northwestern Spain, but this isn’t the Mencía you might expect from the region. This is a white made from Godello, one of Spain’s great native white grapes, and the label tells us something else important: fermentado en barrica—fermented in barrel.

That means we get the freshness and minerality Godello is known for, but with extra texture, richness and complexity from the wood. Think ripe orchard fruit, citrus, herbs and a creamy, substantial feel without losing its freshness.

Godello spent years living in the shadows of Spain’s more famous grapes. Now sommeliers and wine lovers have figured out what northwestern Spain knew all along.

If Albariño and white Burgundy had a very interesting Spanish cousin, I’d introduce you to Godello.
