Clubb's began in Delta on Oct 17, 1968 with Hartland Clubb Sr's purchase of the Ben Franklin Store #5610 from Fred and Mary Potter. The store had been moved to 425 Main Street and remodeled with the latest design from the corporate franchise office in Chicago. Departments includ
ed Toys, Domestics, Housewares, Lingerie, Men's & Boy's wear, full line hosiery, health & Beauty with Hair goods and Makeup. Also Stationery, shoes, ready to wear, greetings cards, stationery, and gifts. He went on to acquire the Gunnison and Montrose stores from Fred Mueller of Gunnison in 1974 and 1975. After closing Gunnison in 1979, with the help of his sons James and Hartland Jr. he developed real estate in Montrose and Delta to reopen new stores in 1979 and 1982. With about 3 times the space, all departments were expanded. Fabric and crafts were increased as other national chains increased their offerings in both towns. While formerly supplying everything from lawnmowers to the paper goods, new brands and departments replaced the usual Variety store fare. A full service custom picture framing department was added in 1980 along with more ready made frames and art supplies from brands like Grumbacher and Liquitex.
