Starling is a massively underutilized fly tying material.

In this video, Simon ties a simple, but effective jigged nymph utilizing a starling collar.

Starling has soft barbs & barbules that branch off of a correspondingly soft rachis or center shaft. This creates movement and allows the fly@to be dead drifted or swung.

The other great thing about starling feathers is that each feather is pre-sized for smaller hooks. No more digging through a bag of feathers or a skin for the right small feather.

We are super excited about the redesigned Guidewater Backpacks from our friends at Patagonia Fly Fish.

It is one of our favorite times of year where the Morrish Hopper from our friends at RIO Products really shines.

We had a little taste of fall a few days ago which means as things really start to get colder here the terrestrial bite will wind down.

Many larger hoppers, especially, are extremely resilient and you will find them literally defrosting well into the fall.

While we still have some warm weather, and fish are really keyed in on hoppers, make sure you get out there and chuck some morrish hoppers while they’re looking up!

A good friend of the shop Wade has founded a new themayflyproject chapter right here in Eugene!

They are actively recruiting anglers who would like to serve as mentors.

The Mayfly Project is a 501 (C)(3) that uses fly fishing as a way to support and encourage children in foster care. Kids learn the basics of fly fishing, spend time outdoors, build confidence, and- most importantly- develop relationships with consistent, positive adults.

Mentors go through an application process, reference and background checks, an interview, and training specific to The Mayfly Project. That training includes trauma-informed care and resources designed to help mentors create an environment where kids feel safe, supported, and free to have fun.

If spending some days on the water teaching a kid to cast, tie knots, catch fish, laugh a little, and simply enjoy being outside sounds worthwhile to you, Wade would love to hear from you.

Interested in becoming a mentor or just want to learn more?

Email Wade at [email protected]

…or DM him on instagram

Help spread the word and give Wade Schlichenmayer a follow for updates!

We just got a big restock of TURTLEBOX speakers in the shop.

We are most excited about the Oregon Ducks green color way which we have in the Gen 3 turtle box.

We also got a restock of the new cub speaker which is small, but mighty.

Lastly we have several rangers which is the smaller taller speaker.

All turtle box speakers are weatherproof, impact proof, and can link up with each other and play in sync.

Swing by and pick up one of the duck green speakers while we have them! They never last long!

If you’re a ducks fan out of state, shop online and we’ll ship it right to you!

Male Pale Morning Dun Imago from earlier this summer.

Emphemerella excrucians

Arguably the most important summer mayfly in the western US in its most important stage: the spinner.

Large dorsal “turbinate” eyes on the head are a dead giveaway of a male emphemerella sp imago.

These eyes along with the abnormally long front arms of male spinners are used to locate females and grab them in large spinner clouds during their final dance.

A mayfly species that many of us hold close to our hearts.

Many anglers’ hoppers are too big, and they are missing out on large trout!

Here Simon ties a smaller hopper for trout keyed in on juvenile or smaller species of hoppers.

Many anglers throw on the same large hopper and wish for the best. There are many species of grasshoppers and some don’t get too large, often in one area there are several species of grasshoppers. Trout often get keyed in on the one in the largest abundance.

Often refusals happen because the insect is too big, or the silhouette is wrong. This hopper has some realistic cues built into it like a segmented underbody and knotted rear legs.

These subtle changes can be the key to convincing that large trout to move to your hopper. Simon likes to tie these in several colors including: pink, purple, tan, brown, and black.

If you haven’t seen, a new story just went live on Oregon Fly Fishing Blog.

Simon 3WT and Adison Adison Rook gave the two ECHO Fly Rods & Reels stillwater specific rods a serious workout up at East Lake.

With Adison’s stillwater expertise, they put the ECHO Fly Rods & Reels Lago and Stillwater 10’ 5wts head to head using a variety of techniques.

Both rods differ in their actions and have their niche that they fill. Read the whole story on our blog Oregon Fly Fishing Blog for the full breakdown.
