“What makes Freehold special is that it never turned into a museum of itself. The luncheonettes and the record shop and the old raceway crowd still give it a lived-in, blue-collar heartbeat. It is a town that remembers where it came from.” 💕

Bruce Springsteen grew up on the streets of Freehold Borough, and you can still walk past the little house on South Street where a kid with a cheap guitar dreamed his way out of town. 🎸 But Freehold was a real working town long before it was a lyric, the Monmouth County seat where farmers, mill hands and rug weavers built a downtown that still stands.

Main Street here has that old county-seat dignity, the columned courthouse, the brick storefronts, the American Hotel that has been pouring drinks since the 1800s. This is the ground where the Battle of Monmouth raged in the June heat of 1778, and where Molly Pitcher supposedly carried water to the cannons. History is thick on these blocks.
