We had a close call some time back when one of our payloaders ran over a lithium-ion battery and a fire broke out. When it’s buried under all the other materials, our operators can’t always spot hazards like a small battery pack. Thanks to a bystander, we caught it in time before the fire could spread, but it took two fire extinguishers to put out!

Lithium-ion batteries are the number one hazard for both recycling facilities and waste haulers (where the battery can break open in the truck’s compactor) alike. The fires are difficult to control and spread rapidly.

PLEASE help us all stay safe and keep ALL lithium-ion batteries OUT of the bin! Bring them to the Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) facility or another designated drop off point for secure disposal.
