I heard the sad news that we lost Perry the other day. I was the second person to take over the hat shop that he started. We lost touch some since I moved the operation to Texas 11 years ago, but have not forgotten about him and Lynne. I feel the Cowboy touch I put on hats is because of him. He was a true classic. He will be missed by so many, and I pray for comfort and peace for Lynne and the rest of his family. Rest in peace, Cowboy.

We often get this request: “Make a hat like this movie or TV character but add a bit of your personal touch to it.” I always think the fusion of the customer and maker is an awesome combination. These hats are inspired by Raylan Givens and Jacob Dutton. We have a few new Straw hats in if anyone’s in the market for one.

We just finished this small brim “Rancher”in black. Kerrie trimmed it in this vintage ribbon we’ve had for many years. We love using vintage equipment and materials. We still use ribbon from the 1960’s whenever possible. Unfortunately, newer materials don’t have the same character as the old. We like to work by our slogan: “We make ‘em like they used to.”

I’ve always loved these “Rancher” style hats. And I really love them in Silverbelly color. And it’s fitting with a Grosgrain ribbon that keeps it traditional. This custom order is with a 4” crown and a 3 1/4” brim. It’s a balanced hat proportion wise and a classic.

I was working today on my birthday, I’m having dinner with my family tonight. When I tell people I was born in 1964, that really sounds old to me. I think TV’s were still black and white. Lol! Here are a few of the hats we’ve built recently. Although we make a lot of Tear Drop crowns, the brims can give each a distinct look. Some of these are our Explorer style with a flat brim dipped in front and back. Others are Guides which have a side curl. And one is a straw Fedora, dipped in the front with a curl on the back of the brim. Every hat should reflect the wearer and their personal style.

We’ve built this hat combination for customers so many times - the “Cattleman” in Silverbelly and Black. In some ways these hats are opposite, yet in other ways they are the same and work with the same complexions and clothing. This Cattleman style will never go away because it has such great lines. It helps us frumpy guys look good. Have a good weekend everyone.
