🍈 Happy Melon Day! 🍈

Today we're celebrating one of summer's sweetest and juiciest treats — melons!

Melon Day originated in Turkmenistan, a Central Asian country with a long history of growing and celebrating melons. Muskmelons are especially important there, and the country is known for its many varieties.

Muskmelons come in all shapes, textures and flavors. Some have smooth skins, while others are ribbed or netted on the outside, with wonderfully sweet and juicy fruit waiting inside. Cantaloupe, honeydew and galia are all examples of muskmelons.

🍈🌻 Suzie Q Adventures: You Don't Have to Travel Far!
Suzie Q says you don't have to travel around the world to enjoy one of summer's simple pleasures. Hop on down to your local farmers market, farm stand, or neighborhood grocery store and pick out a delicious melon!

There are so many ways to enjoy it:

🍈 Cut it into slices and eat it fresh.
🥤 Blend it into a refreshing smoothie.
🍓 Add it to a colorful fruit salad.
🥗 Try it in a new summer recipe.
☀️ Or just sit outside and enjoy a cold, juicy slice on a warm summer day.

Sometimes celebrating doesn't have to be complicated.

It can be as simple as trying a new fruit, supporting a local farmer, learning something about another part of the world, and enjoying something delicious. 💜

🤝💜 Happy National Hand Holding Day! 💜🤝

Every August 9, National Hand Holding Day celebrates one of the simplest ways we connect with another person — reaching out and holding their hand.

Holding hands isn't just for couples. We hold the hands of our children, grandchildren, parents, siblings and friends.

Sometimes a hand says:

❤️ I love you.
🤝 I'm here with you.
💜 You're not alone.
🌼 We'll do this together.

And sometimes we don't need to say anything at all.

🌻 Suzie Q Adventures: Fugi's Helping Hands
In our family, holding hands was just an everyday occurrence.
Fugi held hands. Fugi gave hugs. There wasn't a special reason for it. Affection and physical connection were simply part of everyday life in our house. What we didn't know then was that there was actually science behind some of what we were experiencing.

Positive physical connection, including holding hands and hugging, has been studied for its relationship to stress, feelings of safety and our body's calming responses. Touch can also be associated with the release of oxytocin, a hormone involved in social bonding and connection.

So maybe Fugi knew something without ever needing the science to explain it. 💜

Sometimes when someone is worried, overwhelmed, sad or having a difficult day, we immediately start searching for the right words.

But perhaps they don't always need words.

Sometimes they just need someone to sit beside them...

and hold their hand. 🤝

Today, take a moment to reach for the hand of someone you love.

A child.
A parent.
A grandparent.
A spouse.
A sibling.
A friend.

Because something so small can say so very much.

📚 Happy National Book Lovers Day! 📚

Today, August 9, is a day to celebrate something that has carried stories, knowledge, imagination, and history from one generation to the next — books.

Long before the books we know today, people recorded their stories on clay tablets and scrolls. Paper eventually changed everything, and over the centuries books became something almost everyone could hold in their hands and make their own.

For Suzie Q, spending time with a book is special “me time.”

A book can be a time to learn.
A time to relax.
A time to cook and discover a new recipe.
A time to travel somewhere you've never been.

Books have always been part of our family.

Fugi had a house full of history books. 📖

Jayne's house was filled with children's books and books on just about every subject imaginable — and yes, we even had the big encyclopedia set! Remember those? 😊

There is still something magical about holding a real book in your hands and turning the pages.

And then there are those special self-help and reference books that become truly yours. You highlight passages, underline sentences, tuck little notes inside and return to certain pages over and over again. Eventually, that book holds a little bit of your own story, too.

So on National Book Lovers Day, Suzie Q has a little reminder for all of us:

🌊💡 Happy National Lighthouse Day! 💡🌊

Today we celebrate the beautiful lighthouses that have guided sailors safely home for generations. Standing strong through storms, changing seasons, and the passage of time, these iconic landmarks remind us that even the brightest light often begins with a single purpose—to help others find their way.

Did you know? As our nation's first President, George Washington signed the Lighthouse Act of 1789, creating the U.S. Lighthouse Establishment and ensuring these important beacons would continue protecting our nation's shores. It's a wonderful reminder of how preserving history can continue to serve future generations.

Living in Michigan, Suzie Q knows you could spend years exploring the incredible lighthouses along our Great Lakes. Each one has its own history, breathtaking views, and stories waiting to be discovered.

This adventure is especially close to her heart because Fugi loved visiting Michigan's lighthouses. Exploring the shoreline, learning their history, and watching the waves roll in created memories that continue to inspire new adventures today. Suzie Q hopes to keep that tradition alive—one lighthouse at a time.
