Someone asked if we would be interested in a totem pole. Of course we were!

This piece is more folk art than Native. The owner thought it might have been from Alaska, but it has a lot of the characteristics of Mexican carving.

The undershirt on the red bottom figure along with the wear puts it around the 1950s to me.

What do you see? Where do you think it came from?

A set of seven Mathilde Schaefer bowls--perfect for a party or display.

Schaefer was born in New York City. She studied Raoul Josset and Walter Lemcke and showed her early work at the Art Institute of Chicago. She relocated to Scottsdale, Arizona in 1936 where she established the state’s first kiln and married noted painter Lew Davis.

She was known in Arizona in the 1960s as an instructor of pottery and sculpture at the Desert School of Art. While primarily a ceramicist, she also worked in wood and bronze.

Her work is in a number of collections and described in several general works and technical monographs.

Set of 7 bowls: $74.99
Salt/Pepper shakers: $14.99 each
