What if your family tree could be brought to life in a quilt?

This Sisterhood Quilt was inspired by the women in my family, and it is one of the reasons I believe quilts can preserve so much more than names and dates. They can hold the people, places and passions that make a family unique.

On Saturday, September 12, I'm hosting a FREE Heritage Quilt Discovery Workshop. We'll talk about why you should make a Heritage Quilt, how to capture meaningful family stories before they're forgotten, and how to begin turning those stories into an heirloom.

The FREE Heritage Workbook will be available Monday so you'll have time to read through it, jot down ideas and bring your questions to the live.

🧵 Squares + Strings + Straight Stitches = A Beautiful Quilt
String quilting really is that simple.
Start with a foundation square, place your focus strip diagonally, then add strings to each side using a ¼" seam. Finger press as you go and keep adding strips until the foundation is covered.
Foundation Tip: For The Stringers exchange, I recommend Pellon® 906F Fusible Sheerweight interfacing as the foundation because it gives us a lightweight base without adding a lot of bulk.
No complicated sewing. No need to know the final quilt layout before you begin.
Make first. Design later.
Our Stringers Scrap-Busting Block Exchange is underway, and I’ll be sharing the process from the first strips through quilt construction and the final reveals.

♻️ SCRAP FACT #4: Quilts preserve stories.

A fabric scrap may look small, but it can carry the memory of a person, a project or a season of life. Museum collections and resources such as the International Quilt Museum and The Quilt Index preserve quilts as works of art and as records of the people and communities that made them.

That is one reason our Stringers block exchange is so meaningful. Each finished quilt will contain pieces from fourteen different fabric collections—and fourteen different quilting journeys. Leftover fabric becomes a shared record of creativity, friendship and connection.

Which color from your focus fabric would lead your palette?

Your quilt palette can start with one fabric. Choose a focus fabric first, pull its dominant colors, then use a color wheel to find coordinating primary, secondary and tertiary colors. Audition the group before you cut.
