This day always makes me pause and reflect on how far weโ€™ve come.

My parents gave up everything to bring us to the United States in search of a better life. They left behind their careers, family, friends, home, and all their possessions to start over in Chicago. They arrived with very little, but with a lot of courage and hope.

They worked tirelesslyโ€”cleaning offices late at night, installing car alarms during the day, babysitting whenever they couldโ€”doing whatever it took to build a future for our family. Meanwhile, I spent many afternoons alone in a small apartment, slowly learning English with the help of a dictionary.

Fast forward 34 years, and life looks very different. Today we all work together at Modern Fabrics.
My dad carefully processes your orders, my mom prepares fabrics for our Huntersville store, and I do my best to keep this small business dream alive. (Debra and James are here tooโ€”but todayโ€™s story is about my parents.)

For many years I felt embarrassed by my immigrant story. But as Iโ€™ve grown older, Iโ€™ve come to appreciate it deeply. Itโ€™s a story of sacrifice, resilience, and family. And over the years, Iโ€™ve shared more of it with youโ€”and I love when you write back and share your stories with me too.

So today we celebrate not only a country, but the journey that brought us here.
