25 YEARS LATER

It almost feels like Pearl Harbor. Images of a tragedy from someone else’s life, from a different generation long ago in a country I love. We were different then, and so was I. Revenge is not all consuming anymore, and time has dulled my memory of just how raw it felt to be alive that day. Somewhere deep down, though, I remember everything, exactly as it felt, and that’s not something I want to dig up. It’s simply too hard.

All these years later, the pain has evolved, and there was a silver lining. Millions of us would choose to serve our country in a time of war, naive and indifferent to what it would cost us. Namely, a lot.

But what we gained was far greater. To know the people we know, to see the heroic acts of service in our country and abroad. I find a lot of peace and it fills me with hope and optimism to know how strong the foundation of our people, and our country is.

Then, as now.

As 9/11 is upon us, our path is to honor those who served, to honor our country’s indomitable spirit and a world of friends who supported us (they played the National Anthem in front of Buckingham Palace and our nation wept in gratitude), and to celebrate the lives of all who sacrificed for our way of life. They inspired us then, and they inspire us now.

May we Never Forget.

I woke up in California to the ringing phone. It was my mom: Michael, we are under attack. I rose out of bed into a new world—one where I watched alongside millions on live television as firefighters, EMTs, and police ran into burning buildings, buildings that fell and filled the sky with dust. And I swore then that I would never forget these heroes, their bravery, and their sacrifice.

This past weekend I flew up to New York City for the NYC 25 Miler Ruck. That’s 25 miles for the 25 years that have passed since 9/11—to honor those who put service and the lives of others first. At the meet-up point Cadre Cleve told me that New York City pavement is the hardest anywhere in the world, that it abuses the hell out of your feet. I said, Good.

I set out with the team we formed on the spot: Chris D, Evan Poff , and myself. It was a pleasure to do the miles with these guys—true heart and soul Ruckers. I had met Chris previously at the Ruck or Die NYC event and already knew his inspiring story of dusting off a Rucker back in January of 2025 and losing 155 pounds since. Chris and I were meeting Evan for the first time. He told us he’d flown in from Salt Lake City on a late flight, slept a few hours at the airport, taken the train into the start point, and was heading right back to the airport after. That kind of dedication made us smile. All three of us just felt strongly about being there and were glad we teamed up.

But, I’m not done. I’m heading back to NYC this coming weekend with our IT Manager Hiram Rios to do the HTB: Heavy, Tough, and Basic. I look forward to seeing Chris and Cadre Cleve again and everyone else who has vowed to Never Forget.

Ruck or Die 003 wasn’t just a workout; it was a beautiful, painful tribute to Monster. We burned it down, chased the sunrise, and remembered what matters most: community and the people who show up when things get heavy.

At RUCK OR DIE 003, we burned it down - I haven’t been that smoked in years, and that seemed to be the consensus at the end, right before we rucked back up to join in some 5K fun. We are the weirdos, the ones pushing hard on life, and we have each other. This makes all the difference.

The proving grounds for people is also the proving grounds for our gear, and this go round it was the Mackall 45 and GR MONSTER. Just like us, the gear can handle it, but it’s vital to the death of pride to periodically test yourself, and your gear, hard. Aka every once in a while you have to do something that really sucks, or the risk is that you’re just living in the past at the expense of right this second. At the expense of the truth.

In my life, Monster had just passed, and the event hurt as bad as any I’ve ever been a part of. It hurt less because of the people who showed up with me to chase the sunrise until we found it.

As for the gear, we are immensely proud of both the ruck and the shoes — gear with meaning, gear with soul. Monster’s final approval and his final photo shoot — tough and beautiful like him — before he crossed the rainbow bridge surrounded by nothing but love.

What we tested, including ourselves, has been through blood, sweat, and now a lot of tears.

It hurts, and it’s worth it. I would change nothing.
