Are you a special-occasion-saver? Ohhhh man, when left unchecked that can become SUCH a huge issue for me. So that’s why I’m challenging myself to get those summer items out to wear, experiment with, showcase and enjoy.

I mean, why not? Am I just saving them so I can donate them later? (Silly.) Saving them until I lose a few extra pounds? (Waste.) Saving them because my daily life doesn’t feel worthy enough for fun clothes I like? (Wrong. Bad. Untrue.)

Ask yourself this: “What AM I saving this for anyway?” And then toss those self-imposed restrictions out the window and ENJOY YOUR STUFF. Summer is too short (wellllllll 
 actually this year feels like 1000 summers, so let’s rephrase 
) LIFE is too short to not enjoy the simple pleasure of wearing something that lights you up. Yes, even to Aldi.

There’s decisive, committed, directional, forward-moving action 
. And then there’s, well, not that. Because sometimes the issue (aka problem, aka challenge, aka big giant growling monster of paralyzing fear) just creates a mental or physical (or both) standstill. And then what?

Mental blocks are inevitable. We all know the best advice is to just step away 
 what we do, see, feel, or hear in that step-away-ness is different for everyone.

One thing I can promise you as your stylist: through practice, experiences, coaching, natural talents, and flat-out love of this work, I commit to giving you the solutions you need to minimize these overwhelming feelings when you walk into your closet. Together we build formulas that align with who you are and what you want to convey as you show up in your life, so that the days of standing there staring in motionless bewilderment are over.

This one can sometimes be tough to grasp. We think that to be noticed means to be loud, or to be remembered means to be fringey or scandalous, or to be conspicuous is something to be feared. If you’re comfortable with boldness and outspokenness, heck yeah let your style support that! But if that’s just not you, will you get drowned out by those more bold and visible with their style? Maybe
! So how do you hold your own? With YOUR own style. YOURS. One that doesn’t shrink or hide or fade or blend in or apologize or whisper. Because being memorable can come in lots of forms 
 give people credit; they are able to pick up on (and evaluate) many more cues than just the obvious or loudest or shiniest ones.

You don’t realize it, but by your example, you’re gently undoing some inhibitions, hindrances, internalizations, and shrinking tendencies that those of us a generation (or two!) ahead of you grew up struggling with. I have friends, clients, and family members who hate to shop. And I’m always like “whaaaaaaaaaaa
.?????!!!!” Because that’s such a foreign concept to me. I love it. I mean, I LOVE. IT.

But shopping, as with anything, moderation is key. Maybe placing limits on purchases can prevent crowding out your poor partner’s belongings (I mean, he only has 18 square inches of closet space, so allow him at least that), or it can help reduce the mental load of overwhelm and excess that just makes you freeze in indecision and confusion (ok, what did I come in here for again?), or maybe it’s all about not busting the budget (because, hello, last I checked grocery prices were starting to require commas in their figures). So shopping can, and should, be tempered with some restraint. But boyyyy, the pull of that dopamine hit is powerful, isn’t it?

I woke up this morning thinking (like many) about Dolly Parton.

I’m old enough to remember her on the Porter Waggoner show. I remember her in the 80s singing Islands in the Stream with Kenny Rogers. I remember how she remained fully recognizable, iconic, and groundbreaking thru the 90s up to the present. Her signature style 
 allllll that delicious excess and flashy superfluousness 
 never compromised. Dolly owned her style, hard. And because of that, it never ever came off as silly or pathetic. Her over-the-top style couldn’t be missed, yet it somehow miraculously took a back seat to her strength, conviction, brilliance, and humility.

I think that’s the true mark of the very best in personal style: no matter what is added to the surface, it only supports the soul underneath.
