Maybe it’s the middle age setting … But more and more often as I’m working, some ancient memory from early life occurs to me…

Like I’m all of a sudden, I’m able to see the foundations of a childhood influence long forgotten, that has carried through in the background of my life.

And

If you’re an old guy like me, you will undoubtedly remember a whole genre of pop culture artwork that was popular in the early 90s… This half-underwater, fantastical airbrushed magical absurd fantasy seascape thing. ✨

As I set out to paint with a vague idea of schooling sharks I suddenly recalled that when I was a little boy, we had a “totally radical” coffee table book featuring the art of a Hawaiian airbrush artist that would paint coral reefs, dolphins, orcas, waves, tropical coastline, a sunset, and planets swirling in space…. All in a single composition.

Lol!

Such a nerdy 90’s niche genre that ended up on school folders, trapper keepers and conversion vans

I loved it.

I was a little kid in the cloudy cold Midwest dreaming of some distant coastline— and this stuff had everything in it but scratch and sniff.

as I was sketching this one out and chuckling to myself, I couldn’t help but indulge, just a little bit.

So, thank you to the early 90s airbrush kings who painted trixy optical underwater scenes on the sides of Lamborghini countaches … and helped a kid get by.

Lots of fun. Came together very quickly and I’m pleased with how it’s turned out.

Two videos with ten years in between.

The same idea having undergone a decade of iteration and development.

This evolution is slowly happening in every aspect of our lives, if we put a little effort into it we can push it in a preferred direction of sophistication and complexity.

Imagine the shape of your vessel and move directly at it, with succinct intentional action… allow the benevolent arc of time to increase your powers… and enjoy.

It gets better. I promise.

One of my favorite things about traveling is trying to fit our maximal studio into a minimal suitcase…

My practice tends to be one of those stereotypical messy, sh*t-all-over type of environments that appears to be a colorful chaotic madness from outside the whirlwind, but from within…
Everything is in its right place.

While I look forward to every aspect of traveling as an artist, making these small works on paper or definitely a highlight of the passing the time of hot tropical days.

fun to produce these in situ— like a snapshot or something.

These paintings exist somewhere in between the incomplete ideas that belong in a leather sketchbook, and the formal stretched span of canvas developed in the studio .

Kind of my non-traditional en plein air, if you will.

Anyhow, this painting found me atop an oceanview bluff in Bahia, surrounded by beautiful little forest creatures, including my friends Alex and Loro’s kitten … who’s playful tottering around completed a visible chain of command amongst local inhabitants.

(She inspired the cat as a final design element that was desperately needed to balance the composition, thanks Dorothy, lol.)

A noticeable potential for “food chain action”, with everyone present but peacefully coexisting for the time being— all spiraling into the calm, seeing eye of “the universe “.

A rustic and possibly underdeveloped concept built through paint process via the utilization of Brazil’s early evening warm hues and lavender twilight skies.

Nerdy, but I do like it.

When properly stowed for travel, these smaller paintings usually end up in museum quality shadowbox frames and available in the Gallery… So I’ll just say it.

Brand new and (will be) available— ping me with interest.

Like many nerdy art history loving sculptor people, I went through a period of being thematically preoccupied with my own weirdo version of “the classical nude” for a good solid year or two. This was a while back…

It’s just such a fun way to work…absolutely timeless and acceptable but still a little cheeky and provocative.

Sooo many layers of our humanity can be expressed within this artistic vehicle… no wonder it’s such frequently visited theme.

My original artistic training was in figure painting… so the jump to sculpture was a natural extrapolation using my basic familiarity with “the figure” as a foundation, difficult but very fun.

This one is from right before the pandemic and was the last in a series of 5 or 6 similar artworks I made in that period— and no, they were not all female.

I made these with all wheel thrown and altered pots joined together and fit onto a steel armature, round about life size.

Not sure why I ever departed from the idea, but it’s been a few years now… maybe I’ll revisit one day :-)

This particular sculpture took up residence at my own estate a few years back… She has moved from various spaces in the garden, to the pool, next to the Jacuzzi, etc etc…

Every time she finds a new space there is an ensuing month-long jump, scare scenario as we get acquainted with her presence from inside the house 😂

Anyhow…from the archives—
