The Angler’s Creed ~ From Brandon Birdwell
I firmly resolve, without reservation, to uphold the following principles of fishing and conservation.
1. Respect the Waters
I will respect the waters I fish, the land surrounding them, and the people who share them with me.
2. Protect the Fishery
I will support responsible fisheries management and the conservation of healthy fish populations for future generations.
3. Follow the Regulations
I will obey all fishing regulations, seasons, size limits, possession limits, and special regulations governing the waters I fish.
4. Respect Private Property
I will respect private property and never allow my pursuit of fish to outweigh the rights of a landowner.
5. Practice Good Sportsmanship
I will never knowingly interfere with another angler’s opportunity to fish and will treat fellow anglers with respect.
6. Never Stop Learning
I will continue to study the waters, weather, seasons, forage, and behavior of the fish I pursue, knowing that becoming a better angler is a lifelong pursuit.
7. Respect the Catch
I will use appropriate tackle and handle every fish with respect, whether it is destined for release, the table, or a place of honor.
8. Take Only What I Need
I will keep only what I can responsibly use and release what I do not need with the greatest possible chance of survival.
9. Leave It Better Than I Found It
I will take with me my line, tackle, and trash—and whenever possible, remove what others have left behind.
10. Put the Resource Above the Catch
I will remember that no fish is worth damaging the fishery that produced it.
11. Respect Knowledge and Trust
I will help other anglers grow while respecting the trust of those who have shared special waters, fishing spots, and hard-earned knowledge with me.
12. Remember Why I Fish
I will remember that fishing is measured by more than the number or size of fish caught. The pursuit, the water, the challenge, the memories, and the people beside me are part of the reward.
13. Honor the Tradition
I will do nothing knowingly that brings dishonor to the tradition of angling or threatens the opportunity of future generations to experience it.
My Promise
I will fish with skill, respect, patience, and gratitude—for the fish, for the water, and for the privilege of being there.
