Do you want a science fiction novel that feels fresh and unlike any other you've read? May I recommend THE SALT KING by Natash Pulley! This book was so fun to read, and it touched on so many different things: apocalypse, religion, belief, queerness, and family.

-----------
Jesuit priest Avelyn Brocken was born into a mining family in Hreodwater, a small, totally isolated salt town in the Fens of England. At age 16, he fled, abandoning his faith in the god of the mine-the Salt King-and the mythology that killed his whole family.

When a fellow priest is miraculously healed only to then be turned to salt after a visit to Hreodwater, Avelyn is sent by the Vatican to investigate. But in Hreodwater, the town's gentle doctor, Jericho, tells him that the priest is not the only one experiencing strange cures-and may not be the only one in danger from a substance in the mine that the locals call “salt light.”

Avelyn and Jericho team up to protect the world from the salt light-but they may already be too late: strange happenings are occurring at mines all around the world. At an archaeological dig on the Dead Sea, electrical devices froth salt; at another salt mine in Russia, a KGB officer finds the bodies of five tourists who seem to have turned to salt; and at the huge salt works at Wieliczska in Poland, all communication is lost, and rumors circulate of total annihilation.

As salt light spreads, devastating cities around the world, Avelyn must decide what and who to believe-and whether his faith is strong enough to withstand an apocalypse.

Join Franklin & Marshall professor Dr. Peter Jaros as he celebrates the publication of his new book The Corporate Forms of Antebellum US Literature in conversation with his colleague Dr. Erik Anderson. Haven't brushed up on your early 19th-century literature in a while? Don't worry: no prior knowledge or reading required for this event. You'll get to learn about how in the early 19th century, the corporate form was still a wobbly category that writers used as a vehicle for imagining both personhood and politics in strange and surprising ways. And you'll have the chance to talk about why anyone in 2026 would want to read books from the early 1800s & what exciting intersections there might be between law and literature.

Peter's book will be available for sale at the event! Attendance is free, but please RSVP at our website to snag your seat.

In a fit of rage at what I perceived as the egregious mistreatment of my favorite character, I refused to participate in the tv phenomenon of GAME OF THRONES. Catelyn Stark–whose final thoughts, it must be said, are of her hair–was a matriarch done dirty by tv writers who preferred their women sexier, bitchier, and in a lot more peril. That did not prevent me from religiously logging on to LARB each week to read Sarah Mesle’s brilliant reviews, which often delved into the ‘hair studies’ on which she has now, officially, written the book. Mesle was absolutely transcendent in her readings of Daenerys’s braids, Cersei’s gleaming then shorn golden locks, and Sansa’s aspirational red tresses. That work, paired with her academic training as a specialist in 19th-century American literature, comes to glorious fruition in TANGLED. Over 7 delicious chapters, Mesle takes a tour of the past half-century of white women’s hair. Hair, she argues, has always been a nexus of gendered and racialized power, shot through with intimacy and performance, tangled up in violence and desire.

Every page of TANGLED is rich and rewarding, simultaneously readable and dense with historical context and critical inquiry. Self-serious readers (of the male academic variety) might bristle at the thought of Michel Foucault and Angela Davis sharing the page with Julia Roberts and JoJo Siwa, but Mesle asserts that they are part of the same conversation about the ways we discipline, punish, and ponytail, to borrow her magnificent phrase. I could read Mesle’s thoughts on the deceptive ‘naturalness’ of white women’s hair and its ability to wield the violent power of white supremacy under the guise of innocent femininity ALL DAY, and I frequently found myself rereading entire chapters of this book because the readings were so tight. (Seriously: Mesle offers a gloss of BallerinaFarm’s ponytail that was so razor sharp I had to pull my car to the side of the road to re-listen.) Mesle untangles the various sociopolitical accretions of white women’s hair with a deft hand: TANGLED is exactly the kind of cultural and political critique that can be read in the classroom, for book club, or by the pool.

Are you coming to the VAMPARTY tomorrow? We're celebrating Jessica's birthday but really celebrating our current hyperfixation on the Vampire Lestat and also our general longstanding love of vampires. The queen herself, Sadie Bartch, will be here doing vampire-themed flash tattoos (sign-ups will start at 5pm and are first-come, first-served!), and Rachel from 91 Print Co will be doing live screenprinting of truly iconic vampire art designed by Sadie exclusively for Pocket Books! Jessica has been baking a massive amount of cupcakes (including gluten-free ones!), we've ordered a huge amount of vampire books & stickers, and there's a very strong chance we throw some vampire trivia and/or other games together before 5pm rolls around.

Remember, this event is FREE, baby. We're doing it for love of the game (read: love of vampires), and attendees of all ages are welcome. Bring your kids, bring your thousand-year-old immortal companions, etc. Let's kick off spooky season RIGHT!!!!

Repost slide 2 in your stories to let us (and everyone else) know you're coming!!!!
