After four years of study in Paris, Thomas Eakins returned to Philadelphia in 1870 and set up a studio in his family home on Mount Vernon Street. There, he turned his focus to modern American life, creating the innovative sailing, rowing, and hunting scenes that would define his career.

Several of his sailing works were inspired by real races he observed. Eakins's dedication to getting the details right can be seen in the rigging of the sailboat and the crew's efforts as they strain against the wind.

On view now in "A Nation of Artists."
