About the author
As a youthful immigrant from Greece, Mr. Backus took advantage of the many opportunities the United States had to offer. While attending Chamberlain Vocational High School in Washington, DC, Mr. Backus became interested in and inspired by the HVAC trade. Both during and following graduation, Mr. Backus worked hard to be successful in the HVAC trade, and this hard work paid off to the extent that it provided him with the ability to purchase the H.M. Sweeny Company.
In addition to running a successful business, Mr. Backus has also devoted a tremendous amount of time to another of his great passions, teaching. Mr. Backus has taught HVAC methods and practices to everyone from new customers to government officials, even for employees at the Pentagon. He also took great pride in his lengthy Professorship at Prince George’s County Community College.
Through his endeavors as a local business owner and as a teacher, Mr. Backus has continuously worked to help people and inspire them to success. The H.M. Sweeny Company employs many dedicated and loyal employees that are viewed as family, and Mr. Backus is always looking to add more great employees to the group. By building a great company with great people, Mr. Backus is truly living the American Dream!
As Angelos Backus likes to say,
“I came to discover that the life of a human being is no different than any object. An object has two sides, front and back (positive and negative). The two sides describe the specific thing that becomes useful in the creation of groups. The negative parts of my young life became challenges for me. These challenges gave me the opportunity to look for the opposite side (positive) by using mental energy to recognize opportunities to learn and develop positive parts of my life by knowing the difference. Life’s experiences can be used as personal encyclopedias if they are not taken for granted. Every experience, positive or negative, is a lesson.”
