This would be a really good time to go support another local indie...If you don't need books at the moment they have lots of beautiful plants as well! Summer is always slow for us so I can't imagine having our street all torn up on top of that. 😐

Hi, friends! ✨
Going to be a little vulnerable today.

We’ve officially made it to the end of the first month of construction with our section of Main Street closed, and we just looked at our numbers…

To be blunt, it’s not good. 🥺
We’re averaging about HALF of our normal sales each week.

We know construction is temporary. We know things will eventually get back to normal and we know we’re going to make it through this… But that doesn’t mean it doesn’t hurt.

Watching our sales take such a significant hit is scary. Especially as a small business where every single purchase really does matter.

So… I guess this is our community cry for help. 🥹💕

If you’ve been meaning to stop in, this is your sign! Come grab a book, pick up a plant, bring a friend, share our posts, tell someone about us… every bit of support makes a difference.

🚧 And most importantly, WE ARE OPEN! 🚧
The parking lots are accessible, and we’re here throughout the construction, ready to see you!

We don’t expect anyone to spend money they don’t have. We just want to remind you that when you choose to support a small business, it really does matter.

We’re still here. We’re still growing. And we’re going to get through this together. 🫶🏼

School is back and our LSE Cougars are on the move through downtown.🐾🚲🚌🚗

Please drive with caution. Respect the crosswalks and watch for walkers and buses. A little extra patience goes a long way. Let’s all arrive safely to our destinations.

New logo for our new home! And while I have your attention:

Downtown Lee’s Summit is a small town within greater LS. We know all our friends and neighbors by name and reputation, if not on sight. We’ve made so many friends among our customers since we purchased KD’s four years ago and we are so grateful for all the love and support you’ve shown us; we absolutely would not be here without you. However, like all small towns, word of mouth travels FAST around here, and not always with 100% accuracy. I’ve been back and forth on whether or not I should address this or not, but after today I feel like I should.

This afternoon a regular customer came in and shared a Facebook post that is getting a lot of attention from what seems like quite a few of our customers. I want you all to know that we appreciate the concern that so many of you have shown for us, and I know there are a lot of feelings about the opening of the new Well Read bookstore in our former location today. While we did not anticipate ever leaving after so long in one space, circumstances change. WE have changed a great deal as a business and as humans in four years. I believe that everything happens for a reason, and we've chosen to embrace change and look ahead, not behind us. While unexpected, our move allowed us to customize a space that better suits who we are now, and still gives us room to grow. We love our new building and our new neighbors. Losing our foot traffic has required some adjustments, but as long as you all keep supporting us as you have always done, we’ll be fine.

I also know that many of our customers are excited about having another place to shop. When small businesses and local economies and human connections are under constant threat from mega-corporations and billionaires, digital this and AI that, it’s more important than ever that we stand united, and keep our spending local whenever possible. And in a small town, I certainly don’t want our customers to feel as if they have to pick a side, and I don’t want to see anything divide our local community. No bookstore can carry more than a fraction of the books currently in print. If it’s a choice between shopping at another independent bookstore or buying your books from Amazon you all know where we stand on that! Every indie bookstore I have ever been in has a distinct personality, and not every personality is for everyone. That’s why I don’t consider other indies to be competition, and I think most other bookstore owners would agree with me. We love that so many of you have found a community here at KD’s, we’re always happy to see you and talk books, catch up on your lives and just hang out. But I promise we won’t get mad if you want to visit other bookshops. WE love to visit other bookshops! Just keep coming home to KD's. 💞🏠📚
