Today marks one year being alcohol free…and I didn’t stop drinking because I had a problem.

That’s not true, I did have a problem - my gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT) enzyme was 742 U/L. An in-range score is 3-95. 😳

Out of range liver tests are nothing new to me. I was diagnosed with non-alcohol related fatty liver disease 26 years ago. My mom had the same thing. But I was told that I could still drink alcohol, just not to get carried away.

I had annual blood draws to monitor my liver and the occasional fibroscan to monitor liver scarring and fat buildup. Some years were good, some years were not so good, but never like the test results that I saw last year.

So, on August 24, 2025, I decided to stop drinking.

Why?
Because I want to celebrate my 50th wedding anniversary with Angie.
I want to be friends with my adult kids.
I want to be grandpa, pawpaw, pop pop if/when grandkids come along.

Alcohol was definitely not the only contributor to my poor liver scores.
I eat unhealthy food more than I should.
I could lose 10-15 pounds.
And my deep sleep score is typically low.

But I’m working on all of these, and the blood tests that I had done this past May show improvement. I’m not in the normal range yet, but I’m better than I was a year ago.

My point in sharing this is not just to celebrate one year of sobriety, although I really want to celebrate it 🙂. It’s to encourage you to get annual bloodwork and an annual physical. And if you want to take it a step further, look into more comprehensive tests through companies like Function Health.
