Have you ever seen a Lewis’s Woodpecker and thought, man, that thing is weird. Well I haven’t because I haven’t seen one. 🤣 I’m working on it.

Regardless, the Lewis’s Woodpecker is weird! Rather than the typical black and white woodpecker chic look, Lewis’s Woodpeckers sport iridescent green outer and head feathers with a red face. Furthermore, they hunt like , catching bugs to eat midair. They rarely bore into mature trees for larvae like other woodpeckers because their neck wasn’t built for that. They prefer to nest in soft, dead trees usually in recently burned areas.

Woodpeckers are ecosystem engineers who provide nesting/roosting cavities for mammals, insects, reptiles and other birds!

Thank you, Woodpeckers for your hard work🫡

As the vegans of the bird world, American Goldfinches eat strictly seed with the exception of accidentally swallowing a rogue bug. 🌻

Because of this, American Goldfinches breed in late summer when their favorite plants go to seed so they have plenty of food for themselves and their young, whom they also feed only seeds.

What this means is that Goldfinches are raising young now as some other species have already migrated south!

Now is the best time to put out a finch feeder with Nyjer or Finch Blend. Stop by either of our locations for finch socks, finch feeders, and all things Goldfinch! 💛
