Between 1915 and 1970, roughly six million Black Americans left the South during the Great Migration.

Isabel Wilkerson tells that enormous piece of American history through the lives of the people who actually lived it.

*The Warmth of Other Suns* is history that reads like a story — because history is people.

I’ve been reading Charlotte Richards’ Letters From America, and I really think her work is important right now.

She has a way of looking at what’s happening in this country and connecting it to history without making it feel abstract or academic. It’s more like—here are the things happening right in front of us, and maybe we should actually be paying attention to what they add up to.

I think that’s the part that sticks with me. We always look back at history and wonder how people didn’t see what was happening. But when you’re living through it, you’re also going to work, paying bills, making dinner, worrying about your kids, doing all the regular things. Life just keeps going.

And I think that’s exactly why paying attention matters.

Charlotte is paying attention, and I’m really grateful for the work she’s doing.

Today we remember Gloria Steinem, who died this week at 92.

For more than six decades, she wrote, organized, spoke, and fought for women to have a greater voice in their own lives and in the world around them.

As a journalist, author, activist, and co-founder of Ms. magazine, she helped change the way generations talked about equality, reproductive freedom, work, marriage, and what women could become.

Whatever comes next, we are living in a world she helped change.

Rest in power, Gloria. And thank you for leaving the door a little wider for everyone who came after you. 🖤

We are SO excited to be working with Charlotte Richards, author of Letters from America: Volume 1: 2025.

Charlotte is a historian, writer and activist who has spent the last year doing some pretty incredible work.

She founded Help Me Leave, a nonprofit helping marginalized and at-risk people find safe, legal and realistic pathways to relocate abroad. Their volunteer team researches visas, immigration pathways, safety, cost of living and other information people need to make informed decisions about leaving the U.S.

She also started Letters from America, collecting the real stories of people living through this moment in American history. Nearly 200 of those letters became her first book, Letters from America — preserving these voices instead of letting this part of our history be rewritten or forgotten.

Charlotte and Magpie are working together to support and promote each other’s work, and I am incredibly happy we found each other.

We have Letters from America at Magpie, and signed copies are coming soon!

You can follow Charlotte as Charlotte vs Tyranny — on TikTok, Instagram and Substack.

You can also follow Help Me Leave and learn more about the organization at HelpMeLeave.us.

Go follow her. Go follow Help Me Leave. And come grab her book from Magpie. 🖤

A missing part, gap or blank space.

For example, the mysterious gap in my memory between entering the bookstore and purchasing nine books.
