It’s hard to top a long day on big water with good friends and full nets. When we set out to design Orvis product our goal is for the gear to enhance the demands of the day. When products work well, they take a backseat to the hugs and high fives that forge lifelong memories from a long weekend.

Hilary Hutcheson on tagging Golden Dorado with Set Fly Fishing for the Golden Dorado Conservation Coalition.
 
She calls the rivers of Northwest Montana home and the guides that work there family — but Hilary Hutcheson is at ease in any river, including the Parana River system in Corrientes Province, Argentina. With a fly rod in one hand, and a megaphone for conservation in the other, Hilary carries the fight for wild rivers and native fish everywhere she goes. Hilary is a true “River Person” who gets everyone around her to join the conversation while having a blast doing it. We are proud to call her an Orvis ambassador.

Some places make you earn it. New Zealand’s backcountry is one of them — unforgiving terrain, weather that turns without warning, and trout worth every step of the walk.

Down here the rivers run gin-clear, holding wild browns and rainbows that have made these waters home for over a century. The fish are big, they’re wary, and they’ll humble you in the best way.

We spent a week chasing them with our friends at Chris Jolly Outdoors, an Orvis Endorsed outfitter who put us on water most people never see — and shared the kind of local knowledge that turns a good day into one you don’t forget.

That’s the thing about a place like this: it reminds you why we go in the first place. The hard walk in. Fish that don’t come easy, and a guide who knows the water like an old friend. The good thing is you don’t need a passport to find the adventure…it’s waiting on the water and woods near you too.

The x Approach 120 has officially landed at Orvis HQ and its maiden voyage was last weekend.

The day started off as a humbling streamer morning. Eventually, after a few fly choices were put to rest, we had big browns on the move. Safe to say this boat has found itself at home in the Green Mountains.
