I turned off the AI powered sheath-finder tool that helped customers find the right Delta sheath for their knife. Here's why.
It was a good idea on paper. Automate the number one question I get asked, save everyone some time. And honestly, it mostly worked. Although, every so often it would go a little "koo-koo" and hand out bogus fit info which is not ideal. That alone was reason enough to shut it off. But it wasn't the real reason.
Since going back to answering every single question myself, I've gotten something back I never should have let go of which is the one-on-one conversation with the customer.
Sometimes it turns into a 20-minute back-and-forth about knife steel and heat treating. Sometimes the person buys, and that's great. Sometimes I tell them not to, because I know it won't fit and that's great too. Folks remember and come back later. Some come back two, three, four times over the years for different sheaths.
And every once in a while, after enough of those little conversations, someone stops being "a customer" and transforms into a friend.
No AI tool was ever going to give me that.
I hope you have a fantastic Sunday! ππΊπΈ
