🌿 A little Grounded Roots welcome home…

I had the pleasure of plant sitting for a longtime customer for the past three months while she was away tending to family matters in California. And after caring for her plant babies while she was away, it only felt right to leave a little something to welcome her home. 💚

The good news? All of her plants grew while she was away! 🌿 And her Fiddle Leaf Fig even gave us two new leaves. I also had to stake her upright after she started leaning a little too much. 😉

Plant sitting is a service I provide, but being entrusted with someone’s plants for that length of time is something I truly appreciate. Most of these plants came from Grounded Roots, so getting to care for them, watch them grow, and then return them to their mama makes my heart happy. 🪴

As a little token of my appreciation, I left her a new baby Pilea glauca ( ), a Welcome Home card, and a handwritten note simply saying thank you for trusting me with your plant babies.

Because clearly, the answer to “welcome home” is another plant. 😂🪴

It’s the little things—and the relationships that grow along the way—that I cherish most. 🌿💚

Let’s talk carnivorous plants! 🌿🪰

Who hasn’t seen Little Shop of Horrors? 😂 I think that’s where so many of us were first introduced to the famous human-eating Audrey II.

While I haven’t encountered a human-eating plant yet, I do know of some carnivorous plants that have been documented trapping small rodents. 😳🐭



Carnivorous plants come in all different shapes, sizes and varieties, and their care can be a little trickier than your average houseplant. But once you understand what they need, they’re SO much fun to grow!

💧 WATER, WATER, WATER!

This is one of the biggest ones. Most carnivorous plants are extremely sensitive to minerals in water, so distilled water, reverse-osmosis water or rainwater is the way to go. Tap water can contain enough dissolved minerals to cause problems over time.

Many popular carnivorous plants also like to stay consistently moist, and some bog-loving varieties can be grown sitting in a shallow tray of water. Just remember—different carnivorous plants have different needs.

☀️ LIGHT MATTERS!

And here’s where I would NOT treat these like your typical tropical houseplant. Many carnivorous plants, including Venus flytraps and Sarracenia pitcher plants, actually love bright light and direct sun. A sunny window or strong grow light can be your friend.

🪴 Skip the regular potting soil.

These plants naturally grow in nutrient-poor environments, so regular enriched potting soil and fertilizer can actually do more harm than good. They typically need a specialized, low-nutrient growing medium.

🐜 And yes, they really do eat bugs!

But they’re not getting their energy from the bugs. Just like other green plants, they still rely on photosynthesis for energy. Their prey provides nutrients that are scarce in the environments where they naturally grow.

🐶🐱 Bonus: Venus flytraps are listed by the ASPCA as non-toxic to dogs and cats.

They’re weird. They’re fascinating. They’re a little dramatic. And I absolutely love them. 😂🌿

Spider Mites, oh my! 🕷️🌿

A customer recently emailed me about her newly adopted Audrey Ficus, which she said had been dropping leaves at a rapid rate.

She mentioned she had been out of town longer than expected and wondered if one missed watering could really be responsible for this much leaf drop. 🤔

She also mentioned that her Ficus is sitting in a southwest-facing window.

Before I even saw a photo, I already had a pretty good idea of what I was dealing with.

Spider mites. 🕷️

After reading the rest of her email, she mentioned seeing webbing on the leaves—which only strengthened my suspicion.

I did ask her to send photos and video, including close-ups of the leaves, so I could confirm what was going on before recommending treatment.

Once I had the information I needed, it was time for plant treatment, prevention & placement 101. 🌿

💦 First things first: Get that plant outside or into the shower and hose ‘er down! And I mean really hose it down. Get the entire plant, paying special attention to the undersides of the leaves and where the leaf stems meet the branches. That’s where those little pests like to hide.

💨 Check the air around your plant. She mentioned her Ficus was basically sitting right on top of a vent. Spider mites LOVE warm, dry conditions, so direct airflow from a vent can create an environment they really enjoy.

☀️ The southwest-facing window? Keep it! An Audrey Ficus appreciates bright light, so the window itself wasn’t my concern.
