Learn techniques for weaving textiles from traditions across the Atlantic. Before contact between Europe and the Americas, cultures in each continent produced master weavers and created dazzling pieces of textile art. In this two-day workshop, join artist Cynthia Alberto to study these distinct traditions and practice a variety of techniques on miniature looms. On the first day, explore indigenous textiles from the Americas in The Michael C. Rockefeller Wing at The Met Fifth Avenue and begin a backstrap weaving project. The following day, meet at The Met Cloisters and take inspiration from late medieval tapestries and work on a peg loom.
Presented in conjunction with the exhibition Creatures of Myth and Imagination: Europe and the Americas.
Fee: $250. All materials are provided, and you can take your looms home to continue practicing what you learned. All skill levels are welcome. Exercises and tips will be provided to accommodate a range of learners. Please note: Space is limited; advance registration is required.
